The human remains found outside Clinton yesterday afternoon have now been identified as a young Clinton woman who has been missing for 7 ½ years. After Coroner Nick Nichols had a pathologist identify the skeletal remains this morning, the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office announced this afternoon that the human remains have been identified as 22-year-old Samantha Renee Smith who went missing from her Leila Street residence in Clinton between October and November of 2006. The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office is working in cooperation with the Clinton Department of Public Safety, the Laurens County Coroner’s Office, SLED, and others to further investigate this matter. Ms. Smith’s remains were discovered around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon when a man surveying around the old Clinton sewer lagoon in preparation of harvesting trees stumbled over a bone. The area is property owned by the city. Clinton Pubic Safety has a firefighter training area nearby as well as a firing range for law enforcement. The site is off Highway 308 between the city limits and Interstate 385.
