Laurens Police were dispatched at 12:38 yesterday afternoon on a Shoplifting report where a suspect had reportedly left Wal-Mart in a tan Ford Explorer. Officers observed the vehicle on Exchange Drive as it turned into the City Park. They followed as the vehicle went through the park and stopped on Brownlee Drive, before reaching East Main. The vehicle had Pennsylvania tags and was reportedly registered to a woman with an Pennsylvania address. The young woman was checking on a child in a rear car seat as officers approached. She reportedly told of buying a 20-ounce Mountain Dew at Wal-Mart, but the story was not making sense. Officers located two packages of curtains in the vehicle that had allegedly been taken from Wal-Mart. The young woman began to cry and told of a plan to exchange the curtains for cash, which she needed for gasoline. Police were able to obtain a Laurens address for the woman. They took her to the police station for booking, set a court date for late this month. Officers assisted her in getting gasoline for her vehicle before releasing her, pending her court appearance on the Shoplifting charge.
