High School Track: This weekend the 2014 State Track and Field State Championships were held at Spring Valley High School…. Let’s see how some local athletes fared.

  • CHS: Clinton junior Dee Jennings finished 2nd in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.58 seconds just .09 second behind the first place finisher… He also competed in the 400 meter hurdles and finished 3rd…. Senior Keiron Murphy also participated in the meet in the shot put and discus throw… He finished 5th in the shot put and 7th in the discus… For the girls part of the competition, senior Maleaka Neal finished 6th in the 100 meter hurdles just over a second behind the winner… Sophomore Cynthia McHam finished 4th in the high jump.
  • LDHS: Laurens senior Elijah Case was the only Raider to qualify for the state meet in the 400 and 800 meter run… He finished 3rd in the in the 400 meter run with a time of 48.82 seconds just .6 seconds behind the winner… He was not quite as fortunate in the 800 meter where he finished 8th. Congratulations to the athletes from both schools for their making it to the state finals and their showing in it.

Braves: The Atlanta Braves were in St. Louis over the weekend taking on the Cardinals so let’s catch up on how they did.

  • Friday: Cards 5 – Braves 2…. Last Friday the Braves just could not get the hit they needed at the right time as the Cards took a 5-2 win… The game was tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the 5th inning when the Cards struck for 3 runs then held the Braves scoreless the rest of the way… Chris Johnson was the only Brave to get more than 1 of the Braves hits as he went 2-4.
  • Saturday: Cards 4 – Braves 1…. On Saturday the Braves offense again had trouble getting in gear as St. Louis took a 4-1 win… The Braves were in the game until the 6th inning when the Cards broke a 1-1 tie with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning and added another in the 7th… The Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons had 3 of the Braves 6 hits.
  • Sunday: Braves 6 – Cards 5… Yesterday it seemed the Braves were headed for another loss as they trailed 5-4 going into the 9th inning but the Braves got 2 runs in the 9th and then held on to take a 6-5 win thus avoiding a sweep by St. Louis… Freddie Freeman started the 9th for the Braves with a single then after 2 were out moved to third on a double by pinch-hitter Ryan Doumit… An intentional walk then loaded the bases with 2 outs but the Braves next batter Jordan Schaffer drew a walk scoring Freeman… A wild pitch then allowed Doumit to score… The Braves are now 23-19 on the season and have a 0.5 game lead in the NL East over Washington… They return home tonight for a 9-game home stand with the Milwaukie Brewers being the first team in town for a 3-game series that starts tonight at 7:10.

Greenville Drive: The Greenville Drive were also on the road this ending a series in Savannah on Friday then coming north to Ashville for the Saturday and Sunday games..

  • Friday: Because of a wet field in Savannah on Thursday, the Drive and the Sand Gnats played a doubleheader on Friday… The Gnats took the first game by a score of 11-3… The Drive rebounded and took a 4-1 win in the second game as they avoided being swept by the Sand Gnats winning just 1 of the 3 games on the coast of Georgia.
  • Saturday: Tourist 14 – Drive 6… The Drive then boarded the bus and came north the Ashville to take on the Tourist and the bus ride after the doubleheader may have taken its toll as the Tourist took a 14-6 win on Saturday night… An 8-run 2nd inning by the Tourist proved to be too much for the Drive to come back from but they tried as they had 11 hits to the Tourist 13.
  • Sunday: Tourist 3 – Drive 1… Yesterday the Tourist also won but this time by a score of 3-1.. Ashville got all 3 of their runs in the 4th inning and the Drive were only able to produce 1 run in the 8th inning and had only 4 hits all day… The Drive are now 21-20 on the season and have games today and tomorrow before they get to head back to Greenville.
