Sports Report for Wednesday, 5-21-2014

College Notes:

  • Clemson Baseball: In Greensboro, NC the #5 seeded Clemson Tiger baseball team opens up pool play in the ACC Baseball Tournament this morning at 11:00 as they face the #4 seeded Duke Blue Devils… The game can be seen on ESPN3.
  • South Carolina Baseball: The #4 seeded Gamecocks of South Carolina will open play in the SEC Baseball Tournament in Hoover, Al. this evening…. The Gamecocks will be facing the #5 seeded Mississippi State Bulldogs… Miss. St. earned the right to play S.C. by defeating the Georgia Bulldogs 5-4 in 10 innings last night… The game is the final game of the evening and will start 30 minutes following the conclusion of the third game of the day that starts at 5:30 p.m. ET.

Braves: Braves 5 – Brewers 0…. The Braves used a 3-run third inning to power them to a 5-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers last night in Atlanta… Andrelton Simmons & Justin Upton both had solo homers in the game… Upton now has 3 homers in as many games…. Julio Teheran picked up the complete game win allowing only 6 hits, striking out 8 and walking just 2…. The teams play again tonight in Atlanta.

 

Greenville Drive: Drive 11 – Tourist 1… The Greenville Drive finished their series with the Ashville Tourist last night in N.C. with an 11-1 win… The Drive scored 5 runs in the 2nd and then were never really threatened as they had 13 hits on the night to the Tourist 3… The Drive have the night off tonight and will return to Flour Field tomorrow for a 4 game series with Augusta.

 

Laurens County Speedway: A quick recap of last Saturday night’s results…

  • Limited Late Model… Billy Rushton proved he is the driver to beat in the Limited late Model Division as he took his 3rd win in as many weeks… Michael Smith and Michael Lyons finished 2nd & 3rd respectively.

 

  • Hobby… In the Hobby Division, Dan Lawson appears to be “king of the hill” as he took his 4th win of the season… Mart Patterson pressured him throughout the race and finished 2nd… Tim Tollison finished 3rd.
  • SS4… In the Super Stock 4, T.J. Baker picked his 3rd win of the season… Tim Collins and Brandon Patterson were the next 2 across the finish line.
  • Crates… In the Crates, Dale Tims picked up the win leading wire-to-wire… Terry Bullard finished 2nd and Deano Long 3rd.
  • FWD… And finally in the Front-Wheel-Drive Tony Hill picked up his first win of the season… Scott Isbell and Travis Jamieson finished 2nd & 3rd respectively.
  • Remember: Gates open at 6 and racing starts at 8 at the Laurens County Speedway each Saturday night where they do dirt right!

 

Community Interest:

  • Laurens Raider Baseball will be having a baseball camp June the 9th-12th from 8:30-12:30… Cost of the camp will be $60… Breakfast and lunch will be provided daily thru our school cafeteria… They will limit the camp to the first 40 kids that sign up… Eligible ages will be 7 years old-rising 8th graders… The Raider baseball coaching staff will provide fundamental baseball instruction that will help your child improve his ability as a player… Players will be grouped according to their skill level… Contact head coach Dale Nelson byemail: dnelson@laurens55.org to register.

The Laurens YMCA will be having summer sport and specialty camps all summer long… You can get a $10 discount on each camp by registering the Friday prior to each camp… Call the YMCA at 984-2626 for more information about this or any of the camps…  The following are the next camps on their schedule;
