Sports Report for Thursday, 5-22-2014

College Notes:

  • Clemson: Tigers 5 – Blue Devils 3… The Clemson Tiger baseball team opened up ACC tournament play yesterday with a 5-3 win over the Duke Blue Devils in Greensboro, NC… Clemson trailed 2-1 going into the top of the 5th inning but took the lead when DH Tyler Krieger had a 2-out. 2-run double to put the Tigers up for good…. Steven Duggar then had a 2-out, 2-run single in the 9th to give the Tigers their final runs… Matthew Crownover picked up the win pitching 7⅔ giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits while striking out 9 and walking just 1…The Tigers are back in action tonight as they face #1 seeded Miami Hurricanes who lost yesterday to the #9 seeded Yellow Jackets by a score of 6-3… First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
  • South Carolina: Bulldogs 12 – Gamecocks 0… Some days you get the bear and some days the bear get you and for the Gamecock baseball team last night it was not a bear that got them but a bulldog as Mississippi St. took a 12-0 win over South Carolina in 7 innings… The Gamecocks trailed 4-0 going into the top of the 7th inning when the all 4 wheels came of the Gamecock’s bus as the Bulldogs but 8 runs on the board on the inning… The Bulldogs pounded out 14 hits while holding the Gamecocks to just 2… The Gamecocks will now face #1 seeded Florida who was upset by #9 seeded Kentucky yesterday when Kentucky took a 4-2 win… The game will be the second game of the day out in Hoover, Al and will start somewhere about 1:30 pm
  • Furman: The Furman baseball team is off to a good start in Southern Conference Tournament down in Charleston… On Tuesday they took a 6-5 win in 11 innings over UNC Greensboro… Yesterday the #8 seeded Paladins faced off with the #1 seeded Catamounts of Western Carolina and came away with a big 3-2 win… They remain in the winners bracket and will take on Appalachian state today at 5:00
  • Wofford: The #6 seeded Wofford Terriers opened play in the SoCon Tournament against #3 Samford and fell by a score of 4-2…. They now fall into the losers bracket and will face The Citadel today at 1:00 in a loser go home game.


Braves: Brewers 6 – Braves 1… The Atlanta Braves suffered from a lack of offense last night as they were only able to muster 5 hits in a 6-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers in Atlanta… The Brewers Kyle Lohse went 8 innings on the mound giving up only 1 earned run on 4 hits while striking out 8 and walking none… Justin Upton had 3 of the Braves 5 hits in 4 plate appearance… The teams finish the current series tonight at The Ted.

Greenville Drive: The Drive were off last night and will start a 4 game home series with the Augusta Green Jackets tonight at 7:05 at Flour Field… The Drive are currently 22-21 on the season and are 7.5 game behind SAL Southern leader Savannah.

CHS: The CHS 2014 Spring Sports Ceremony will be today starting at 6:00…  It will be held in the Gymnasium and refreshments will follow (in Cafeteria)….Tickets are $2….  Athletes are admitted free…. Tickets will be sold in Coach Webb’s office (weight room) or Coach Barnes office..



Community Interest:

  • Laurens Raider Baseball Camp… Coach Dale Nelson and the Rider baseball staff will be having a baseball camp June the 9th-12th from 8:30-12:30… Cost of the camp will be $60… Breakfast and lunch will be provided daily thru our school cafeteria… They will limit the camp to the first 40 kids that sign up… Eligible ages will be 7 years old-rising 8th graders… The Raider baseball coaching staff will provide fundamental baseball instruction that will help your child improve his ability as a player… Players will be grouped according to their skill level… Contact head coach Dale Nelson by email for more information and to register:



  • 4th Annual CHS Athletic Booster Club Golf Tournament… The CHS Athletic Booster Club will be holding their 4th Annual Golf Tournament on Saturday May 31st at The Links @ Stoney Point down on Lake Greenwood… This is a major fund raiser for the Club that helps them do a lot of things that the school’s athletic budget just cannot cover… They literally help every sport at CHS… Now if you want more information, call Jimmy Webb Club President at 833-4949 or click on the following link which will lead you to the posting on the school’s athletic website:   CHS Booster Club Golf Tournament Information

The Laurens YMCA will be having summer sport and specialty camps all summer long… You can get a $10 discount on each camp by registering the Friday prior to each camp… Call the YMCA at 984-2626 for more information about this or any of the camps…  The following are the next camps on their schedule;
