Sports Report for Monday, 5-26-2014

College Notes:

  • Clemson Baseball: On Friday, the Tigers (36-23) mustered only four hits and fell to Georgia Tech 3-0 to end their hopes of playing for an ACC title… The Tigers trailed 1-0 going into the top of the 9th inning due to a strong start by Clemson Pitcher Clate Schmit who went 8⅓ innings before being lifted by reliever Matt Campbell who then gave up a 2-run homer to make it 3-0 and the Tigers just could not come up with another rally… The Tigers will find out today if they made it into the field of 64 trying to make it to Omaha for the College World Series. .. By the way, Georgia Tech defeated Maryland 9-4 to win the ACC baseball and Championship and will get an automatic berth into the regionals.
  • South Carolina Baseball: While the Gamecocks made their usual early exit from the SEC Baseball Tournament last week they did find out that they will be one of the 16 host sites for the annual Div. I Baseball Championship… It will be announced today who else will be involved in the regional and whether or not they are a top 8 seed to be a host for a Super Regional if they should win their regional… By the way, LSU defeated Florida 2-0 to win the SEC Baseball Championship and they also will be a regional host.
  • Southern Conference: In the SoCon finals in Charleston yesterday, Georgia Southern defeated Samford 4-3 with a walk-off base-loaded single in the bottom of the 9th inning… On Saturday Georgia Southern defeated Furman twice to earn its trip to the title game while Samford defeated Wofford to earn its title shot.
  • Lander Baseball: The Lander Bearcat baseball team won its first game in the NCAA Division II Baseball finals in Cary, NC on Saturday defeating Chico State 6-4… The Bearcats trailed 4-3 going into the bottom of the seventh when they scored three runs to take the lead for good… Lander now goes to 52-7 on the season and the nationally third-ranked Bearcats will meet Southern Indiana (46-12) in a winner’s bracket game today at 5 o’clock… The Screaming Eagles advanced with a 4-3 upset victory over top ranked University of Tampa earlier Saturday… Tampa had its 21-game winning streak snapped

Braves: The Braves played host to the Colorado Rockies over the weekend…

  • Friday: Braves 3 – Rockies 2… On Friday, the Braves opened the series with the Rockies with a 3-2 win… The Braves pounded out 10 hits and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 8th inning and then brought in Craig Kimbrel who picked up his 13th save of the season.
  • Saturday: Rockies 3 – Braves 1…. The Rockies rebounded on Saturday and took a 3-1 win in a pitcher’s duel where the 2 teams combined for only 10 hits with Braves getting only 4 of them… Mike Minor took the loss for the Braves giving up the 3 earned runs on 4 hits 2 of which were solo homers.
  • Sunday: Braves 7 – Rockies 0… Yesterday the Braves took the series with a 7-0 win in the final game of the current series with the Rockies…. The Braves used the long ball to win the game as 4 of their 7 hits were homeruns… Evan Gattis had 2 of those homers a 2-run shot and a solo homer to give him 10 on the season… Chris Johnson picked up his 2nd homer of the season a 2-run homer in the 8th inning and Justin Upton also had a 2-run homer in the 5th inning to give him 13 homers on the season… The Braves remain home today and tomorrow for a short 2-game series with the Boston Red Sox with today’s game starting at 1:10 pm.

 

Greenville Drive…. The Greenville Drive finished their 4-game series with the Augusta GreenJackets over the weekend… As you may remember, the Drive took a 7-2 win on Thursday night in game 1 of the series… On Friday they defeated Augusta 2-0 … Then on Saturday the wheels on the bus fell off for the Drive as they managed only 3 hits while giving up 14 hits as the GreenJackets took a 14-0 win over the Drive…. In the 4th and final game of the series yesterday, the Drive jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning but could not hold it as Augusta took a 7-5 win to earn a 2-2 split in the 4 game series… The Drive will head down the road to Charleston for 4 games over the next 3 days with the RiverDogs.

  • Laurens Raider Baseball Camp… Coach Dale Nelson and the Rider baseball staff will be having a baseball camp June the 9th-12th from 8:30-12:30… Cost of the camp will be $60… Breakfast and lunch will be provided daily thru our school cafeteria… They will limit the camp to the first 40 kids that sign up… Eligible ages will be 7 years old-rising 8th graders… The Raider baseball coaching staff will provide fundamental baseball instruction that will help your child improve his ability as a player… Players will be grouped according to their skill level… Contact head coach Dale Nelson by email for more information and to register:   dnelson@laurens55.org

Laurens YMCA:

The Laurens YMCA will be having summer sport and specialty camps all summer long… You can get a $10 discount on each camp by registering the Friday prior to each camp… Call the YMCA at 984-2626 for more information about this or any of the camps…  The following are the next camps on their schedule;
