Sports Report for Wednesday, 5-28-2014

Laurens County Speedway Results: Let’s take a quick look back at the results fro the LCS last Saturday night.

  • FWD… In a very close race, Travis Jamieson just “nosed out” Joel Cabe at the finish line to become the first driver in the division to win more than one race this season… Mason Mack came in 3rd.
  • Limited… In the Limited division, Michael Smith grabbed the lead in the first lap and then held off challengers to take the win… Frank Coates and Mike Kernels were the next 2 across the line.
  • Hobby… In the hobby division, Mart Patterson picked up his first win of the season breaking Dan Lawson’s 3-race winning streak… Lawson did finish 2nd pressuring Patterson and Tinker Roberts finished 3rd.
  • Crates… Now the Crates division also had a first time this season winner in the person of Chris Pendleton… He took the lead early and held on holding off Nick Deitz who finished second and Deano Long who was third across the finish line.
  • SS4… And finally in the SS4, Joe Gibson led pretty much wire-to-wire picking his 3rd win of the season… T.J baker and Brandon Patterson rounded out the top 3 in that order.
  • Reminder… The gates open at 6 each Saturday night and racing starts at 8:00 at the Laurens County Speedway where they do dirt right.Lady Raider Softball Awards… Last night the Laurens Lady Raider softball team held their annual awards banquet at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center… The Raiders are coming off a season where they went 24-6 overall and 14-0 in region play therefore finishing first in Region I-AAAA… Two of their loses were to the Lady Rebels of Byrnes in the district playoffs and Byrnes finished their season winning the Class AAAA State Championship… Allison Foreback, Maria Williamson, Tara Bond, Jordan Henderson and Elizabeth Carman were all selected to both the All-Region I-AAAA team and the GoLaurens.com All-County Team… Maria Williamson also received the honor of being named the Region I-AAA and Laurens County Player of the Year… Coach Butch Clark received similar recognition for being not only the Region Coach of the Year but also Laurens County Softball Coach of the Year… Click on the following for a more complete list of awards as well as some photos :   2014 Laurens Raider Softball Awards          Congratulations to all these young ladies and Coach Clark for an excellent season!

 

Braves: Red Sox 6 – Braves 3…. The Atlanta Braves completed their current home stand last night with a 6-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox… The Braves led 3-2 going into the top of the 7th inning when Boston put 4 runs on the board and then blanked the Braves the rest of the way to take the win… Justin Upton led the Braves offense going 3-3 and Jason Heyward picked up his 4th homerun of the season with a solo shot in the 1st inning… The Red Sox centerfielder and former Gamecock standout Jackie Bradley Jr. went 2-4 with 2RBIs…. Both teams will get on a plane and head to Boston as they continue play against each other tonight in Boston.

Greenville Drive: The Greenville Drive played a pair of 7-inning games down in Charleston against the RiverDogs last night and the Drive came up on the short end of both games… In game 1, the RiverDogs took a 4-2 win… In game 2, the RiverDogs prevailed by a score of 3-0… The teams will finish out the present series tonight on the coast with the Drive needing a win to even the series at 2 games each.

 

Community Interest:

  • Laurens Raider Baseball Camp… Coach Dale Nelson and the Rider baseball staff will be having a baseball camp June the 9th-12th from 8:30-12:30… Cost of the camp will be $60… Breakfast and lunch will be provided daily thru our school cafeteria… They will limit the camp to the first 40 kids that sign up… Eligible ages will be 7 years old-rising 8th graders… The Raider baseball coaching staff will provide fundamental baseball instruction that will help your child improve his ability as a player… Players will be grouped according to their skill level… Contact head coach Dale Nelson by email for more information and to register:   dnelson@laurens55.org

 Laurens YMCA:

The Laurens YMCA will be having summer sport and specialty camps all summer long… You can get a $10 discount on each camp by registering the Friday prior to each camp… Call the YMCA at 984-2626 for more information about this or any of the camps…  The following are the next camps on their schedule;

Golf Camp:

June 10-12, Ages 7-15, 9:00 – 11:00 am at Lakeside Country Club,

Cost: $40 Y-Members, $55 Non-Members
