Laurens Police were dispatched to an address on Cleveland Park at 4:21 yesterday morning on a report of a Burglary and a Fight in Progress. A woman at the scene said a man had come into the house and was assaulting a 68-year-old man. As police arrived in the area Officer Kanipe, who had previous experience with the subject of the case, reportedly observed that man running into his house on Spratt Street, and barricade himself inside. Sgt. Gainey established contact with the subject and advised him to come out. He reportedly replied by saying the officer was at the wrong house. He said who had called in the report and said police needed to go to that house on Cleveland Park. He reportedly added “You are not my master. Good night.” Police talked with the woman at the other house who told of the subject following her inside her house when she came home from work at 4 am and of his striking the man in her house with keys. Officers set up a perimeter around the subject’s house. When he would not come out Sgt. Gainey obtained a search warrant then he and other officers forced their way into the house and found the subject lying on a bed. 37-year-old Darius Jamel Toland of 104 Spratt Street, Laurens was taken to the Johnson Detention Center. Warrants were obtained charging him with 1st Degree Burglary, 1st Degree Assault and Battery and with Use of a Weapon During a Violent Crime. Bonds on the three charges totaled $75,000. Darius Toland was being held in the Johnson Detention Center this morning.
