Sports Report for Monday, 6-2-2014

College Baseball Notes:

Clemson… The Tigers traveled to Nashville and participated in the regional hosted by Vanderbilt…

  • Friday: Oregon 18 – Clemson 1… Clemson opened up the regional play on Friday afternoon against the Oregon Ducks…. Clemson took and early 1-0 lead but Oregon but 3 on the board in the 2nd inning and never looked back as they posted an 18-1 win over the Tigers… To put it simply, the Ducks pounded out 20 hits to the Tigers’ 5 and 2 errors also hurt the Tigers.
  • Saturday: Xavier 6 – Clemson 4… Then on Saturday in an elimination game, the Tigers bats became more active as they collected 9 hits and led 2-1 going into the bottom of the 5th inning when Xavier put 2 runs on the board and added 3 more in the 7th inning to go on to a 6-4 win over the Tigers… The Tigers finished their season with a 36-25 record.


South Carolina… The SC Gamecocks hosted a regional in Columbia with a 27 game winning streak in Columbia regionals on the line.

  • Friday: SC 5 – Campbell 2… The Gamecocks opened regional play on Friday night as they took on the Camels of Campbell…. The Gamecocks put 3 runs on the board in the bottom of the second and added 2 in the 8th as they took a 5-2 win over the Camels… Sophomore shortstop Marcus Mooney and sophomore designated hitter Max Schrock led the way with three hits apiece out of the Cocks total of 11 hits… Jordan Montgomery took the win pitching 8 innings.
  • Saturday: Maryland 4 – SC 3… Saturday evening the Gamecocks and the Maryland Terrapins squared off in a winner’s bracket game and for the first time in 28 consecutive regional game in Columbia, the Gamecocks found themselves on the losing end of a 4-3 score… Maryland jumped out to a 4-0 lead after 2 innings and the Gamecocks scored 1 in the 4th and 2 in the 6th to cut the lead to 1… The Gamecocks had runners on third and first with 1 out in the 9th but grounded into a double play to end the threat and breaking the Gamecocks 28 game home winning streak in the regionals.
  • Sunday Afternoon: SC 9 – Campbell 0… The loss forced SC to face Campbell for the 2nd time in the tournament in an elimination game… South Carolina jumped out to a 5-0 lead after 4 innings and then coasted to a 9-0 win as the Gamecock pitchers held the Camels to just 4 hits while the Gamecocks picked up 13.
  • Sunday Night: Maryland 10 – SC 1…. The win against Campbell sent the Gamecocks into rematch with Maryland last night knowing they would have to beat the Terps twice to advance to the Super Regional… SC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead but could not hold it as Maryland scored 10 unanswered runs to take a 10-1 win and eliminate the Gamecocks from the regionals for the first time in 24 years when the Gamecocks hosted… Simply put, the Terps got the clutch hits especially with 2 outs while the Gamecocks left men stranded in crucial situations… South Carolina ends its season with a 44-18 season record.


Braves: The Atlanta Braves were on the road this weekend down in Miami in a 3-game series.

  • Friday: Braves 3 – Marlins 2… On Friday the Braves took a 3-2 win… The Marlins used the homerun ball to jump up 2-0 after 1 but Braves battled back to take a 3-2 win… Starting pitcher Julio Teheran picked up the win going 7⅓ and went 2-3 at the plate scoring a run… Jason Heyward went 2 for 5 to be the only other Brave to get more than 1 hit.
  • Saturday: Braves 9 – Marlins 5… The Braves made it 2 in a row against the Marlins on Saturday with a 9-5 win… BJ Upton, Tommy LaStella and Gerald Laird each had 2 hits to lead the Braves’ offense.
  • Sunday: Braves 4 – Marlins 2… yesterday the Braves completed a sweep of The Fish by taking a 4-2 win… The game was tied 2-2 when in the top of the 9th inning Braves catcher Evan Gattis had a 2 run homer to lift the Braves to the win…. The Braves will have tonight off.


Greenville Drive: The Greenville Drive completed their 4-game series with the Hickory Crawdads over the weekend… You may remember that the Drive lost 4-2 on Thursday but rebounded to take a 7-6 win Friday night… The Drive’s bats went cold on Saturday as Hickory took a 7-1 win… Yesterday the Drive again had trouble getting their bats going as they mustered only 5 hits to the Crawdads 12 as Hickory took a 7-2 win over the Drive to win the series 3 games to 1.


Community Interest:

Laurens Raider Baseball Camp… Coach Dale Nelson and the Rider baseball staff will be having a baseball camp June the 9th-12th from 8:30-12:30… Cost of the camp will be $60… Breakfast and lunch will be provided daily thru our school cafeteria… They will limit the camp to the first 40 kids that sign up… Eligible ages will be 7 years old-rising 8th graders… The Raider baseball coaching staff will provide fundamental baseball instruction that will help your child improve his ability as a player… Players will be grouped according to their skill level… Contact head coach Dale Nelson by email for more information and to register. Football Officials Wanted… Have you ever sat in the stands at a football game and said to yourself I can do as good a job as those “blind zebras” out there… Well now is your chance to prove that… The District 13 Football Officials Association is looking for a few good men or women to who want to be football officials… If you are interested, call Brian Shealy at the Clinton YMCA… The phone number there is 833-1555… One note, you need to do this ASAP as they have already started meeting getting ready for the coming season.
