College baseball Notes: The Road to Omaha is becoming less crowded as most of the Super Regionals have been concluded and all but 3 or the final 8 are know… Those teams are:

  • UC Irvine… The #3 seed Anteaters of UC Irvine defeated the Oklahoma State Cowboys in 2 straight games in the Stillwater Super Regional by scores of 8-4 and 1-0 to advance
  • Texas… The Texas Longhorns also pinched their ticket to Omaha by winning 2 straight games of the Houston Cougars… The Scores were 4-2 and 4-0.
  • Louisville… The Louisville Cardinals also won their Super regional in 2 straight games as they defeated the Owls of Kennesaw State by scores of 5-3 and 7-4.
  • Vanderbilt… The Commodores of Vanderbilt are also headed to the College World Series but it took them 3 games to eliminated the Sanford Cardinals… They won the first game 11-6 but Stanford rebounded to take the second game 5-4… The Commodores then slammed the door on the Cardinals taking a 12-5 win in the deciding third game.
  • Texas Tech…. The Texas Tech Red Raiders but an end to the only team from SC to make it to the Super Regionals as they defeated the Cougars of the College of Charleston… The Cougars put up a good fight as they lost both games by identical scores of 1-0… The Cougars wind up their season with a 44-18 record
  • Now some of the Super Regionals will be decided tonight… Virginia and Maryland are tied at a game each as are TCU and Pepperdine…. Ole Miss and Univ. of Louisiana are also tied at 1 -1 and will play tonight also.

Braves: The Braves had a 3-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks over the weekend out in Phoenix..

  • Friday: Braves 5 – D-backs 2… Jason Heyward had 3 hits in Friday’s game (one of them a 2-run homer) to drive in 3 runs and lead the Braves to a 5-2 win…And a footnote to the win, Craig Kimbrel is only in his fifth full season in the Majors, all of them as the closer for the Braves, set the club’s all-time save record of 155… He surpassed John Smoltz in doing so.
  • Saturday: D-backs 4 – Braves 3 in 11… The D-backs bounced back on Saturday and took a 4-3 win over the Bravos in 11 innings… The Braves led 2-1 going into the bottom of the 9th when Craig Kimbrell blew only his 18th save of his career giving up a run allowing the D-backs to tie the game 2 all… Both teams scored single runs in the 10th and the D-backs got the winning run in the 11th of 2 singles and a walk.
  • Sunday: D-backs 6 – Braves 5… The D-backs took the rubber game of the series with a 6-5 win over the Braves yesterday… Justin Upton had given the Braves a 2-0 lead in the top of the 6th with his 2-run homer but Arizona responded by getting all 6 of their runs in the bottom of the 6th… The Braves did get 2 runs in the 8th and 1 in the 9th to get within 1 but could get no closer… Freddie Freeman and Ramiro Pena both had homeruns late in the game to lead the Braves comeback attempt… The Braves will move on to Colorado to start a 4-game series with the Rockies tonight.
