Sports Report for Thursday, 6-12-2014

College Notes:

  • Over the last day or two both the Clemson and South Carolina baseball programs got some good news… At Clemson, it was announced that Jack Leggett will be back to head the Clemson baseball team next year… It will be his 22nd year at Clemson… At South Carolina, junior first baseman Kyle Martin has said thanks but no thanks to Los Angeles Angels who drafted him in the 20th round of the MLB draft last weekend… The first baseman led the Gamecocks with a .336 average last season said yesterday he would return for his senior season.
  • By the way, some of the players who have ties to the State of South Carolina who were drafted last weekend in the MLB Draft have already signed with their teams… For example former Gamecock catcher Grayson Greiner signed with Detroit and picked up a little over half a million dollars in a signing bonus… Not quite the 22 million Jadeveon Clowney picked up a week or so ago… So far he is the only drafted player from Carolina or Clemson that had signed as of last night… For a list of those who played in the State of South Carolina, click on the following link: 2014 MLB Results for State of South Carolina

Braves: Rockies 8 – Braves 2… The Colorado Rockies put 3 runs on the board in the bottom of the 1st inning and then their pitchers pretty much shut the Braves down as they took an 8-2 win last night at Coors Field… The Rockies’ pitchers led by rookie lefthander Tyler Matzek held the Braves to just 7 hits while striking out 9 and walking none… The Braves only player to have more than 1 hit was Chris Johnson who went 2-4… The Braves finish their 4-game series with the Rockies this afternoon in a 3:10 start.

Greenville Drive: Drive 6 – RiverDogs 3… The Greenville Drive avoided being swept by the Charleston RiverDogs last night at Flour Field when they took a 6-3 win… The Drive made the most of their 6 hits on the night scoring single runs in each of the first 5 innings and another in the 8th… The Riverdogs got all their runs in the last 2 innings…. The Drive will board the bus and travel to Hagerstown, Maryland for a 4 game series with the Suns.
