Sports Report for Tuesday, 6-17-2014

Local Notes:

  • Clinton All-Star Coaches Pitch Dixie Youth Wins District Tournament… Congratulations go out the Clinton Coaches Pitch Dixie Youth All-Star Team as they defeated Laurens last Friday and Saturday to win the district tournament… They took the best of three series recording an 18-5 win on Friday night and a 15-2 win on Saturday… On Friday Clinton jumped out of the box quickly scoring 4 runs in the 1st inning and 9 in the 3rd to take a 13-1 lead that was just too much for Laurens to come back from.. Lee Malone led Clinton with 3 hits while Buddy Baker paced Laurens with a hit and a run scored… In Saturday’s game, Laurens jumped out in front getting 2 runs in the first inning but Clinton would score 15 runs before Laurens could score again… Jy Leake had a big game for Clinton going 3-3 with a grand slam homerun and 6 RBIs…. Buddy Baker and Elijah Grant had 2 hits each for Laurens… Clinton advances to state tournament play next week in Florence.
  • Laurens Green Coaches Pitch Team Wins Little League District Tournament… If you will recall last Friday, I told you that the Laurens Little League Coaches Pitch Green All-Star Team won their opening game on Thursday night… well good news as they did not lose another game and captured the District Tournament in Piedmont over the weekend… On Friday night the Laurens Green defeated the Laurens Gold team by a score of 13-3… Malik Jackson, MJ Henderson & DJ Harvey all went 3-3 for the Laurens Green… Seth Hill had a 2-RBI triple for the Laurens Gold… Then on Saturday Laurens Green picked up 2 more wins defeating Easley 10-8 and Wren Gold 6-5… That set up the title game on Sunday against the defending champion Wren Blue… On Sunday, they defeated Wren Blue 15-5 to clinch the title… Laurens jumped out early with 5 runs and Wren just could not play catch-up ball… Zay Pulley led Laurens going 4-4 and scoring 2 runs in the game… Laurens Green now advances to the state tournament next week… Congratulations not only to the winners of both tournament but also to the members of the other two local all-star teams for being selected to play. 

 

CWS Baseball Notes:

  • Texas 4 – Louisville 1… Louisville became the first team eliminated from this year’s CWS as Texas defeated them 4-1
  • Vanderbilt 6 – UC Irvine 4… Vanderbilt went to 2-0 in the winners’ bracket game last night as they defeated UC Irvine 6-4
  • Today’s Schedule… This afternoon at 3:00, Texas Tech and Mississippi will square off with the loser being eliminated and the winner living to fight another day… Then at 8:00, TCU and Virginia will meet in a winner’s bracket game.

 

Braves: Phillies 6 – Braves 1 (in 13) … Last night the Braves hosted the Philadelphia Phillies in the first game of a 3 game set… The Phillies led 1-0 going into the bottom of the 9th when the Braves tied the game with 3 singles the last one by Andrelton Simmons scoring Justin Upton who led the inning off with a single… The score stayed tied 1-1 until the 13 inning when the Phillies got 5 runs and then held on top take a 6-1 win.

Football Officials Wanted… Have you ever sat in the stands at a football game and said to yourself I can do as good a job as those “blind zebras” out there… Well now is your chance to prove that… The District 13 Football Officials Association is looking for a few good men or women to who want to be football officials… If you are interested, call Brian Shealy at the Clinton YMCA… The phone number there is 833-1555… Also you can come to their meetings which are held each Monday night in the meeting room at the Clinton YMCA to get more information… The meetings start at 6:00 pm… The last date to join them is Sunday, July 13th.

Women’s Basketball:

Lacrosse:
