McCarthy Named as Head Baseball Coach at CHS… Yesterday CHS Athletic Director David Barnes announced that Sean McCarthy will take the helm of the Red Devil baseball program as the new head coach replacing Coach Lee Atkinson who recently stepped down from that position… Coach McCarthy is a Content Mastery Teacher at CHS and this last winter served as assistant coach with the varsity girls’ basketball team and prior to that served as head coach of the softball team… Congratulations and Good Luck to Coach McCarthy.


 CWS Notes: Yesterday there was a winner’s bracket and loser’s bracket game played in the CWS out in Omaha.

  • Mississippi 2 – Texas Tech 1… In the elimination game yesterday, Texas Tech scored a run in the top of the 9th inning to tie their game with Mississippi at 1-1 but Ole Miss responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the 9th to take the win and make Texas Tech the 2nd team eliminated from the CWS.
  • Virginia 3 – TCU 2… Well it took them 15 innings to do it, but Virginia defeated TCU 3-2 to advance to the semifinals on Friday while TCU  will play in an elimination game against Mississippi on Thursday night.
  • Today’s Schedule: UC Irvine will face Texas tonight in another elimination game with the winner advancing to play Vanderbilt Friday afternoon


Greiner and Gossett make Perfect Game All-American Team…. Former Gamecock catcher Grayson Greiner and former Tiger pitcher Daniel Gossett were named to the Perfect Game All-American teams for their performances during the last college baseball season… Greiner made the 2nd team and Gossett the 3rd… Greiner was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 3rd round and Gossett by the Oakland A’s in the 1st round… Both have signed contracts with their respective teams.. Braves: Phillies 5 – Braves 2… The Philadelphia Phillies made it 2 in a row over the Atlanta Braves last night at Turner Field as they took a 5-2 win over the Braves… The Phillies jumped out to a 4-0 lead as Braves pitcher Ervin Santana continues to struggle as of late as he gave up those 4 runs on 8 hits out of the 10 total hits registered by the Phillies… The Braves managed just 6 hits Jason Hayward was the only Brave to get more than one as he went 2-4 win an RBI… The Braves will try to avoid the sweep this afternoon as they finish their current home stand before heading out of town tomorrow.


Greenville Drive: The Drive were off last night as the South Atlantic League held its North – south All-Star Game up in Hickory, NC.. The Drive had 5 players make the south squad.. They were catcher Jake Romanski, infielders Carlos Asuaje and Jantzen Witte, pitcher Joe Gunkel and relief pitcher Jonathan Aro… Also serving as coaches in the game were the Drive’s Manager Darren Fenster and Pitching Coach Paul Abbott… By the way the game ended in a 4-4 tie.

Football Officials Wanted… Have you ever sat in the stands at a football game and said to yourself I can do as good a job as those “blind zebras” out there… Well now is your chance to prove that… The District 13 Football Officials Association is looking for a few good men or women to who want to be football officials… If you are interested, call Brian Shealy at the Clinton YMCA… The phone number there is 833-1555… Also you can come to their meetings which are held each Monday night in the meeting room at the Clinton YMCA to get more information… The meetings start at 6:00 pm… The last date to join them is Sunday, July 13th.
