Sports Report for Monday, 6-23-2014

College Baseball Notes: The CWS is now down to 2 teams as Vanderbilt and Virginia will start a best of 3 series tonight at 8:00 pm for the championship… Texas did not go quietly as they defeated Vanderbilt 4-0 on Friday afternoon…That forced a loser go home game on Saturday and Vanderbilt took a 4-3 win in 11 innings to claim its spot in the championship series… Virginia started to punch its ticket to the championship series on Friday night but weather caused them to suspend the game until Saturday where they finished the job defeating Mississippi 4-1… Vanderbilt is now 49-20 on the season and Virginia is 52-14… Should be two pretty evenly matched teams coming into the contest tonight.

Braves: The Braves finished their 4-game series with the Washington National up in the DC area over the weekend playing games 2, 3, & 4…

  • Friday: Braves 6 – Nationals 4 (13)… After taking a 3-0 win on Thursday night, the Braves made it 2 in a row over the Nationals with a 6-4 win on Friday but it took them 13 innings to do it… The Braves had a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the 9th but Craig Kimbrel could not hold it as the Nats scored 2 in the inning to send the game into extra innings… Evan Gattis singled in the 13th inning to bring in B.J. Upton who had walked earlier with what proved to be the winning run… Freddie Freeman had 3 of the Braves 12 hits going 3-6 with a solo homer.
  • Saturday: Nationals 3 – Braves 0… The Nationals came back on Saturday and took a 3-0 win over the Braves regaining their lead in the NL East by a ½ game which they had given up the day before… The Braves managed only 5 hits and the only bright spot there is that Evan Gattis had one extending his hitting streak to 20 games the longest for any Braves catcher…. Julio Tehran did not pitch all that bad for the Braves going 7 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 7 hits while striking out 10 and walking 2 but had no offensive support to help him out.
  • Sunday: Nationals 4 – Braves 1… Then yesterday Washington earned a split of the 4-game series and stretched their lead in the NL East to 1.5 games as they took a 4-1 win over the Atlanta… The Nationals jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning and that would prove to be all they needed as the Braves offense went AWOL producing only 1 run on 4 hits on the night while Washington picked up their 4 runs on 9 hits… Freddie Freeman was the only Brave to have more than 1 hit as he went 2-4 scoring the Braves only run… Evan Gattis had his hitting streak broken at 20 as he went 0-3… The Braves will have today off to regroup.

Greenville Drive: The Greenville Drive were at home over the weekend concluding their 4 game series with the Savannah Sand Gnats…

  • Friday: Drive 21 – Gnats 1… After losing the opening game of the series on Thursday by a score of 6-3 to the Gnats, the Drive rebounded on Friday with the most lopsided wins I can ever remember in the teams’ history as they took a 21-1 over Savannah… The Drive touched 3 Gnat pitchers for 20 hits to produce the 21 runs and not a single one of those hits was a homerun.
  • Saturday: Gnats 7 – Drive 6 (11)… Give Savannah credit because after the big loss on Friday, they came back on Saturday and took a 7-6 win in 11 innings… A leadoff walk, stolen base, sacrifice fly and a single in that order by savannah in the 11th brought the winning run home while the Drive went down in order in their half of the 11th.
  • Sunday: Drive 7 – Gnats 3… Yesterday the Drive rebounded and took a 7-3 win over the Sand Gnats thus earning a split of the 4 game series… The Drive are on the road for a while now with their first stop being in Ashville tonight to start a 4 game series with the Tourist.
