Sports Report for Wednesday, 7-2-2014

The City of Laurens Parks and recreation Department where they have asked me to remind you that tomorrow night they will be having their annual Riverfront Freedom Festival and part of that will be the announcement of the winners of Laurens Idol and Laurens Jr. Idol… Each of the 10 finalists will give one last performance starting at 6:30 on the Laurens Amphitheater stage with the winners announced after that…. After that will be the group Outshyne will take the stage followed by fireworks… Pack your lawn chairs and make plans to attend.

Local Notes: Greenwood Little League Majors 12 – Laurens 2… Last night at Laurens City Park the Greenwood and Laurens Little League Majors team played for the District 1 championship and unfortunately Greenwood came out on top by a score of 12-2 and advances to the state championship series… Sorry no other details at this time… Congratulations to the Laurens team on their effort.

Braves: Braves 5 – Mets 4…. The Atlanta Braves continued to add to their winning streak last night as they took a 5-4 win over the Mets to make their winning streak 6 games… The Braves and the Mets were tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the 4th inning when the Braves put 3 runs on the board and then held on to take a 5-4 win over the Mets… The Mets outhit the Braves 10-7 but Atlanta was able to get the clutch 2-out hits that were the difference in the game… Braves catcher Christian Bethancourt, first baseman Freddie Freeman and shortstop Andrelton Simmons all had key 2-out hits that drove in runs…. The teams will finish the current 3-game series tonight at 7:05 with the Braves trying for the sweep.

Greenville Drive: Tourist 5 – Drive 2…. The Greenville Drive returned home last night but the friendly confines of Flour Field did not help the outcome of the game as the Drive lost their 8th consecutive game as the Ashville Tourist took a 5-2 win last night…. The Drive led the Tourist 2-0 going into the top of the 6th inning when the visitors struck for 5 runs in the inning and held the Drive scoreless the rest of the way… The same 2 teams will play game 2 of the 3 game series tonight at 7:05.

World Cup: Belgium 2 – US 1 in OT… The US Soccer team’s effort to advance into the quarter finals of the World Cup came to an end yesterday in Brazil as they lost to Belgium 2-1 in OT (extra time)… The score was ties 0-0 at the end of regulation and Belgium went up 2-0 in the OT before the US scored a goal and came close to tying on at least 2 occasions… One person on the US team who truly gave it his all was goalkeeper Tim Howard who was officially credited with 16 saves the most in any World Cup finals match since 1966 and a new record for saves by a US goalkeeper… It was a great effort by the team and Howard as they were not expected to get into the knock-out round of 16.
