Sports Report for Thursday, 7-3-2014

All-Star Notes: Congratulations go out to the Clinton Dixie Youth Minor 9-10 All-Star team as they defeated Mid-Carolina 15-2 last night to win the district championship down in Batesburg-Leesville thus punching their ticket to the state tournament in Florence beginning July 18th… The district tournament began last week and the team went undefeated… On Friday they defeated Abbeville 12-2 and on Saturday defeated Mid-Carolina 14-5… Then on Sunday they defeated Batesburg-Leesville 11-0… Rain on Monday caused the semi-finals to be held Tuesday where they once again defeated Abbeville this time by a score of 8-6… That set up last night’s championship game with Mid-Carolina… For more information on the game, click on the following link: Clinton Minors Win District Tournament… Congratulation and good luck to the team!

Braves: Braves 3 – Mets 1… The Atlanta Braves ran their winning streak to 7 games last night as they took a 3-1 win over the Mets and swept the 3-game series from them… The Braves scored all 3 of their runs in the first inning with the big hit coming from the bat of Chris Johnson who had a 2-out, bases loaded double to drive in the Braves 3 runs… Johnson and Andrelton Simmons led the braves with both players getting 2 hits each of the Braves total of 8 hits… Julio Teheran picked up the win for the Braves going 7 innings and giving up 1 earned run on 4 hits while striking out 5 and walking 3… The Braves will have the night off tonight…. A quick reminder that the 85th MLB All-Star Game will be July 15th at Target Field the home of the Minnesota Twins… The All-Star voting has started and will be open until just before midnight on tonight… You can vote multiple time.… If you are interested, click on the following link: MLB All-Star Voting

Greenville Drive: Tourist 8 – Drive 7 (10)…. The Greenville Drive are headed in the opposite direction when compared to the Braves as they lost their 9th consecutive game as the Ashville Tourist took an 8-7 win last night at Flour Field… Granted the Drive came close last night and rallied putting 5 runs on the board in the bottom of the 9th inning to tie the game at 6-6 to send it into extra innings… In the top of the 10th, the Drive gave up 2 runs but responded getting a single run in their half of the 10th before a double play ended the game with the Tourist winning 8-7…. The Drive will finish their current series with the Tourist and their home stand tonight at 7:05.

Laurens County Speedway Results… Let’s take a moment and recap the results from the main events at the Laurens County Speedway last Saturday night.

  • Super Stock 4… Brandon Patterson picked up his first win of the season in the Super stock 4 main event as the 2 cars ahead of him took each other out with about a half-lap left to go in the race… TJ Baker finished 2nd and Brandon Frazier 3rd.
  • FWD… In the Front Wheel Drive, Joel Cabe’s car was smoking (literally) as he took the win with his car sparking and smoking due to a fire… Travis Jamieson and Spud Ammons were the next two across the finish line.
  • Limited… Billy Rushton appears to be the driver to beat in the Limited division as he took another win again last Saturday night… Frank Coates and B.J. Eubanks finished second and third respectively.
  • Hobby… The Hobby main event was dominated by Chris and Mart Patterson who finished first and second in that order… Tinker Roberts finished third.
  • Crates… And finally in the Crates, Dale Tims took the win with Chris Pendleton finishing 2nd and Nick Deitz 3rd.
  • Remember, the gates open at 6 and racing starts at 8:00 at the Laurens county Speedway each Saturday night where they do dirt right!
