Sports Report for Monday, 7-7-2014

Braves: The Braves played host to the Arizona Diamondbacks over the weekend and the Braves entered the series as the hottest team in baseball with a 7 game winning streak…

  • Friday: Braves 5 – D-backs 2… On Friday the Braves extended their winning streak to 8 games with a 5-2 win over the D-backs…The Braves pounded out 12 hits to the D-backs 7 and 5 different Braves got 2 hits each… Freddie Freeman was one of those 5 who went 2-4 with a game high 2 RBIs… Ervin Santana picked up the win going 7.1 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 6 hits while striking out 6 and walking 1
  • Saturday: Braves 10 – D-backs 4… On Saturday, Arizona jumped out to a quick lead scoring 3 runs in the 1st inning but Atlanta scored 10 of the remaining 11 runs in the game to take a 10-4 win… The big inning for the Braves was the 4th when they put 5 runs on the board and never looked back… Braves rookie catcher Christian Bethancourt who went 3-5 scoring a run but Justin Upton went 2-3 with one of the hits being a 2 run homer and he also had another RBI to give him a total of 3…. Aaron Harang picked up the win going 8 innings giving up 4 runs 3 of which were earned but only struck out 1 and walked 1.
  • Sunday: D-backs 3 – Braves 1… As Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman said after yesterday’s game “We weren’t going to win the rest of the games” and that is true as Arizona took a 3-1 win over Atlanta… The D-backs got only 5 hits to the Braves 7 but one of them was a 2 run homer in the 3rd inning and then they added another run in the 9th while holding Atlanta to a single run in the 4th inning… The Braves will be on the road until after the All-Star Game on Tuesday the 15th and their first stop will be in New York tonight to start a 4-game series with the Mets.

Greenville Drive: The Greenville Drive spent the weekend down in Augusta taking ion the GreenJackets… The Drive were mired in a 10 game losing streak going into the 3-game series and it did not get any better as the GreenJackets swept the series..

  • Friday: Augusta 13 – Greenville 9… On Friday the Drive had a 7-3 lead going into the bottom of the 5th inning when Augusta put 6 runs on the board in the inning and added 4 more in the 7th in route to a 13-9 win over the Drive.
  • Saturday: Augusta 6 – Greenville 5… On Saturday the Drive led 5-3 after 8.5 innings but three hits coupled with a walk and 2 Drive errors allowed the GreenJackets to take a 6-5 win.
  • Sunday: Augusta 10 – Greenville 5… Then yesterday the GreenJackets completed the sweep of the Drive with a 10-5 win… Greenville actually outhit Augusta 8-7 but the Drive shot themselves in the foot with 6 errors… The Drive remain on the road as they travel to the coact to take on the Charleston RiverDogs in a 3-game series.

 World Cup… Catching up with the Word Cup, the number of teams left in the completion is now down to 4 and the first semi-final will be tomorrow when Brazil and Germany play at 4:00 pm… Then on Wednesday, the Netherlands and Argentina square off also at 4:00 pm…. The third place game will be Saturday and the finals next Sunday.


Countdown to Start of Football Season: Hang on football fans it’s only 46 days until Clinton opens up its football season at AC Flora, 52 days until PC opens up at Northern Illinois and 53 days until Laurens host BHP in the start of the Chris Liner era at LDHS.


This & That: Football Officials Wanted… Have you ever sat in the stands at a football game and said to yourself I can do as good a job as those “blind zebras” out there… Well now is your chance to prove that… The District 13 Football Officials Association is looking for a few good men or women to who want to be football officials… If you are interested, call Brian Shealy at the Clinton YMCA… The phone number there is 833-1555… Also you can come to their meetings which are held each Monday night in the meeting room at the Clinton YMCA to get more information… The meetings start at 6:00 pm… The last date to join them is Sunday, July 13th.

  • Gym-style games and activities instructed by Josie Parker & YMCA staff

PC Sports Camps
