Sports Report for Tuesday, 7-8-2014

Greenville Drive: Charleston 4 – Drive 3…. The Greenville Drive’s losing streak continues on as it is now 14 games as the Drive lost 4-3 in Charleston to the RiverDogs… The RiverDogs scored the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning on a 2-out walk-off single to take the win… Game 2 of the 3-game series will be tonight at Joe Riley Stadium at 7:05.


Braves: Mets 4 – Braves 3 (11)… After winning 9 games in a row, the Braves have no dropped 2 games in a row as the Mets took a 4-3 win in 11 innings last night in New York in the first game of their 3 game series… The Braves trailed 2-0 going into the 8th inning when they put 3 runs on the board to take a 3-2 lead… However, the lead was short lived as the Mets tied the game with a run in their half of the 8th inning… The game remained tied 3-3 until the bottom of the 11th inning when the Mets… Ruben Tejada had a 2-out walk-off single for the Mets to get the win… The Braves actually outhit the Mets 12-7 with Freddie Freeman going 3-4 to lead the Braves offense…. Game 2 of the 3 game series is tonight in New York at 7:05

3 Braves Make NL All-Star Roster… Craig Kimbrel, Freddie Freemans and Julio Tehran were named late Sunday to the NL East Squad for the 2014 All-Star Game next Tuesday, July 15th in Minneapolis… This is the 4th straight time that Kimbrel has been selected to the squad… Freeman was voted onto the squad last year but a hand injury prevented him from playing… Teheran’s first selection comes during his second full season at the Major League level… The 23-year-old right-hander sparkled as a rookie last year and has now established himself among the game’s elite starting pitchers… Now the voting for the for the all-star roster is not quite over as one more player for the American and national League Squads will be selected by fan vote out of 5 for each squad selected MLB… One of those nominated for the NL Squad is Braves outfielder Justin Upton… The Braves are asking all Braves fans to vote for him ASAP… To vote for him, click on the following link: All-Star Game Final Fan Voting.


Former Raider Makes All-Star Team… Late last week the Coastal Plains League announced their 2014 All-star team and former Laurens Raider and rising North Greenville Crusader senior Allen Staton made the squad for the West Division All-Star team… Staton is playing for the Columbia Blowfish out of Columbia, SC and the team is one of seven in the West Division and one of 14 in the league…. Allen is batting .324 for the Blowfish, with five RBI and nine runs scored… Allen also has accounted for one home run and four doubles and based on votes he will be the starting third baseman…. This is the second consecutive year Allen has made the team… Going into last night’s contest, the Blowfish were in first place in the West Division… The CPL All-Star will be played nest Monday July 14th in Morehead City, NC…. Laurens & Clinton High Have Passing Completion Today… Both Laurens and Clinton High School football teams continue their summer preparation for the upcoming season as both will be involved in 7 on 7 passing completion today… The Red Devils will travel down to Clinton this morning for contest that begin at 10:00 am… The Raiders will travel over to the PC campus for similar competetions starting at 8:00 this morning and going on until around 4:00 this afternoon.

Countdown to Start of Football Season: Hang on football fans it’s only 45 days until Clinton opens up its football season at AC Flora, 51 days until PC opens up at Northern Illinois and 52 days until Laurens host BHP in the start of the Chris Liner era at LDHS.


This & That: Football Officials Wanted… Have you ever sat in the stands at a football game and said to yourself I can do as good a job as those “blind zebras” out there… Well now is your chance to prove that… The District 13 Football Officials Association is looking for a few good men or women to who want to be football officials… If you are interested, call Brian Shealy at the Clinton YMCA… The phone number there is 833-1555… Also you can come to their meetings which are held each Monday night in the meeting room at the Clinton YMCA to get more information… The meetings start at 6:00 pm… The last date to join them is Sunday, July 13th.

Pee-Wee Camp

  • July 23-25, Ages 3-6, 9:00 – 11:00 @ Laurens YMCA

  • Gym-style games and activities instructed by Josie Parker & YMCA staff

Art Camp

PC Sports Camps
