Laurens City Police were dispatched to Sunset Park at 6:04 last evening on a report of a careless driver who had ignored a stop sign, drove up an embankment then backed over shrubbery at a residence. Officer Jody Thibodeau was traveling toward where some believed the subject driving lived when he heard people yelling behind him. He then observed a car traveling toward Martha Franks Retirement Community, so he turned and followed. He observed the car turn onto Williams street but when he turned there the vehicle was not in sight. While Officer Thibodeau returned to talk with people at the incident scene on Sunset Park, Officer Heidi Blackstock located the suspect car parked at 105 Brooklyn Park. Attempts to get a response at the door were not successful. Lt. Heath Copeland obtained permission from the man renting that house to enter, and officers used keys that had been left in the ignition of the suspect car to enter the house. They found a man and woman in a back bedroom. Officers were told a juvenile who had been with them had wanted to drive, and was driving during the mishap on Sunset Park, but the man indicated he had driven the vehicle back to Brooklyn Park after observing the police vehicle.
A 15-year-old juvenile was then located at his residence and he was arrested and charged with Driving without a License and Leaving the Scene of an Accident. His case was turned over the DJJ.
Laurens Police have also arrested the man and woman found at the Brooklyn Park residence. Both have been charged with Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. Warrants obtained by Lt. David Brewer cite an investigation of Lt. Heath Copeland and indicating that 26-year-old Lucas Hank Knight and 20-year-old Heather Leann Marler of 105 Brooklyn Park told a juvenile to drive the vehicle. Lucas Knight was placed in the Johnson Detention Center last night. Due to concerns about the amount of intoxication observed on Ms. Marler, she was first taken to the hospital for treatment, then delivered to the Johnson Detention Center around 3:30 this morning. Both were being held, pending arraignment on the charge of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. The Juvenile remained in custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
