Westbound Interstate 26 was closed at Newberry briefly late yesterday morning, as law enforcement captured a suspect wanted in a Columbia-area bank robbery.
The bank robbery suspect fleeing from Richland County Sheriff’s Deputies entered Newberry County on I 26. Richland County alerted Newberry County allowing deputies to position themselves on exit ramps with tire deflation devices. The first set of Newberry County Deputies were going to attempt deployment but did not due to heavy traffic and concerns for safety. The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies then closed the interstate to prevent danger to traffic during deployment of the drop strips. A second set of Newberry County Deputies were positioned at SC 219 (Main Street) and deployed the devices. The suspect attempted to avoid the strips but stopped in the grass shoulder. The suspect was quickly surrounded and taken into custody without incident.
I 26 Westbound was closed for a short time while the suspect was secured and to contain the crime scene. Traffic was opened up once all areas were deemed safe and secure.
And Richland County got the suspect they wanted for the bank robbery there.
