Sports Report for Monday, 7-14-2014

World Cup… Well for you world futbol fans (we call it soccer) like Emil’s daughter Jennifer, I’ll quickly recap final couple of matches in the world Cup competition down in Brazil over the weekend…

  • Third Place Game… In the contest on Saturday to determine who would finish 3rd, the Netherlands took a 3-0 win over the home team Brazil to further add salt to the wound of the host team who lost to Germany on Tuesday 7-1…
  • Championship… In the championship game yesterday, Germany took a 1-0 win over Argentina in extra time to take what is most likely the most prized trophy on earth, the World Cup… The winning goal came in the 113th minute of the match and it came of the foot of Mario Gotze who came into the game in the 88th minute as a substitute… This is the 4th time Germany has won the World Cup but the first time since East & West Germany reunited into 1 country… Argentina captain Lionel Messi has won FIFA’s Golden Ball award (best player in the completion), despite being unable to inspire his side to World Cup glory… Is my memory bad or did the US barley lose to Germany 1-0 earlier in the completion?

Braves: The Braves were up in the windy city of Chicago for a 3-game series with the Cubs their last before the all-star break:

  • Friday: Cubs 45 – Braves 4… In the first game on Friday, the two teams went back and forth with the Braves tying the game 4-4 in top of the 9th inning but Chicago scored the winning run after 2 were out with a single, stolen base and another single to take a 5-4 walk-off win… The Braves got 6 hits in the game to the Cubs 7 and Jason Heyward led the Braves going 2-4 being the only Brave to get more than 1 hit.
  • Saturday: Braves 11 – Cubs 6… On Saturday the Braves rebounded and scored 11 runs on 12 hits as the Braves evened the series with an 11-6 win… The game was tied 3-3 going into the top of the 4th inning when the Braves struck for 6 runs and the Cubs just could not dig out of that hole… The wind was blowing out at Wrigley Field and the Braves Chris Johnson took full advantage of it as he had a pair of 2-run homers… Even Braves pitcher Mike Minor had one (his first of the season) on a solo shot in the in the 4th inning…. Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons had the most hits for the Braves as he went 3-5.
  • Sunday: Braves 10 – Cubs 7… In the series finale yesterday, the Braves took a 10-7 win over the Cubs to give them the series win 2 game to 1… The Braves jumped out to 7-0 lead at the end of 3 innings and added 3 more in the 7th while the Cubs scored all their runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th inning… Chris Johnson again had a great day at the plate for the Braves as he went 3-4 with 3 RBIs and one of his hits was a 3-run homer in the 3rd inning… Julio Teheran picked up the win pitching 7 innings and Craig Kimbrel picked up his 29th save of the season pitching the 9th inning… The Braves are now off for the all-star break and I’ll have more about the all-star game tomorrow

Condolences: Due to having to take a couple of days off late last week, this is the first opportunity I have to do this so at this time I would like to express my condolences to the family of former LDHS Principal Wayne McIntosh who passed away last Tuesday night… As you may remember, he served our community as LDHS Principal from 2008-2012… You also may remember that on several occasions Mr. Mac helped us out here on football Friday nights serving as color commentator… Being a former coach himself, he brought a great understanding of the game to the microphone and his enthusiastic support for the Raiders was evident both on the radio and off… Again, my condolences to his family.

Countdown to Start of Football Season: Hang on football fans it’s only 39 days until Clinton opens up its football season at AC Flora, 45 days until PC opens up at Northern Illinois and 46 days until Laurens host BHP in the start of the Chris Liner era at LDHS.
