College Notes

  • SEC Media Days… Another sure sign that football season is getting closer is the fact that the SEC started their annual Media Days out in Alabama yesterday… Commissioner Mike Slive of course started things off and then the head coaches and select players from Auburn, Florida and Vanderbilt had their opportunities… South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier will be first up today and I expect him to be a little more subdued than last year but he is always seems to be able to come up with a gem or two at these events.. Click on the following for the SEC Media Day schedule: SEC 2014 Media Day Schedule
  • ACC Media Days… The ACC will have its Days starting this coming Sunday up in Greensboro.

  • The Braves are off for a couple of days due to the all-star break so lets take a quick look at the MLB standings… In the NL East, the Braves and Nationals are tied for the lead with the NY Mets 7 games back in 3rd… In the NL Central, Milwaukee has a 1 game lead over St. Louis and a 1.5 game lead over Cincinnati… In the NL West, The Dodgers holds a 1 game lead over the Giants and San Diego is 12 games in back of them… Turning to the American League East, Baltimore is on top 4 games ahead of Toronto and 5 in front of the Yankees… In the AL Central, Detroit is 6.5 games in front of Kansas City and 7.5 in front of Cleveland… And finally in the AL West, Oakland is 1.5 games in front of the LA Angels and 8 games in front of Seattle.
  • A reminder that the All-Star Game is tonight at 8:00 pm and 3 Braves made the team… First baseman Freddie Freeman, pitcher Julio Teheran and closer Craig Kimbrel…

Greenville Drive: When we last checked on the Greenville Drive they were mired in the worst losing streak in the franchise history… Last Thursday the Drive started a 4 game series with the Augusta GreenJackets at Flour Field.

  • Thursday: Augusta 8 – Greenville 2… On Thursday their losing streak reached 17 as they lost 8-2 to Augusta.
  • Friday: Greenville 7 – Augusta 6… On Friday the Drive fell behind early but managed to 4 runs in the last 4 innings with 2 of them coming in the bottom of the 9th inning to get the monkey off their back and take a 7-6 win to end the 17 game losing streak… Greenville outhit Augusta 13-4 in the game.
  • Saturday: Greenville 4 – Augusta 0… Then on Saturday the Drive won their 5th game since the SAL All-Star Game as they took a 4-0 win over the GreenJackets… Augusta actually outhit Greenville 7-6 but gave them a helping hand with 3 errors.
  • Sunday: Greenville 8 – Augusta 5… On Sunday the Drive continued their winning ways by taking an 8-4 win over the GreenJackets… Greenville had an 8-2 lead after 5 innings and held on for the win… The Drive were off last night and will have a short road trip starting tonight as they play game 1 of a 3-game series against the Rome Braves down in Georgia.
