Sports Report for Thursday, 7-17-2014

Local Note: Clinton will be well represented in the state playoffs for Dixie Youth this weekend as they have two teams that will be in completion in different age groups…. Check back tomorrow when I will have more information including the brackets.

Braves: The Braves were off last night and will be again tonight as part of the all-star break… The Braves will start an 11-day home stand tomorrow night with the first team in being the Phillies for a 3-game series..

Greenville Drive: Braves 5 – Drive 2… Well the Greenville Drive had their winning streak snapped at 4 games yesterday as the Rome Braves took a 5-2 win over the Drive down in Georgia… The Braves took an early 4-0 lead and never really were threatened as the Drive’s offense generated only 4 hits in the game… The rubber game of the 3-game series will be tonight in Rome.

NASCAR: Well the Sprint Cup and Nationwide race schedule has a break built into the schedule for this weekend and the following weekend they will get back into action in Indianapolis at the Brickyard… With only 7 races left until the chase for the Sprint Cup begins let’s take a quick look at the driver standings…

  • Sprint Cup… Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson lead the pack with 3 wins on the season each but Keselowski has a 36 point lead over Johnson to be #1… Positions 3 thru 6 are occupied by drivers who have two wins each… In order they are Dale Earnhart Jr., Carl Edwards, Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick… spots 7 thru 11 are occupied by Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Aric Almirola and Kurt Busch in that order all of whom have 1 win each this season… Matt Kenseth, Ryan Newman, Clint Boyer, Paul Menard and Kyle Larson would also qualify for the chase if it started next week.
  • Nationwide… In the Nationwide Series, the top 5 are Regan Smith, Elliott Sadler, Chase Elliott, Ty Dillon and Brian Scott.

Raiders 7 on 7… The Laurens Raiders will be traveling up to Woodruff this afternoon in a 7 on 7 passing completion… If you get a chance, travel on up there and the action starts at 5:00 pm.

Countdown to Start of Football Season: Hang on football fans it’s only 36 days until Clinton opens up its football season at AC Flora, 42 days until PC opens up at Northern Illinois and 43 days until Laurens host BHP in the start of the Chris Liner era at LDHS.
