A female inmate on a work detail escaped from the State Department of Corrections late yesterday morning. The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office responded to Interstate 26 at the 52 mile marker after an SCDC employee reported that an inmate on a work detail picking up trash on the Interstate had apparently run away and into nearby woods, wearing her two-piece SCDC jump suit and black boots. She had been seen during a count at 11:40, but shortly afterward another inmate reported she had run away. In addition to the Sheriff’s Office, SLED responded with bloodhounds and a helicopter. The Highway Patrol, Transit Police, Laurens and Clinton Police and SCDC assisted in the search. A man called Laurens County dispatch to advise he thought the escapee was at his residence on Highway 56 just north of Clinton. Captain Richardson and Lt. Bridges went there and took 46-year-old Kimberly Collins of Fountain Inn into custody. She was held at Clinton Public Safety until SCDC picked her up.
