Laurens City Police were conducting a traffic safety checkpoint at the intersection of Church and Hampton Streets at 10:08 last evening when Sgt. Michael Gainey observed a white KIA approach the checkpoint. He reported that when he made contact with the driver he observed the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The driver indicated she didn’t have her license with her. She provided her name and other information. After another officer confirmed he, too detected marijuana in the vehicle they asked the driver and a male passenger if they had any narcotics. After both initially said no, the passenger reportedly indicated he had marijuana on his person. He provided two bags of marijuana from the right front pocket of his pants. Officers noted it contained 23.45 grams. 23-year-old Desmond Marquis Bates of 208 Jersey Street, Laurens was then arrested to be charged with Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute.
