Local Notes

Clinton 9-10 DY All-Stars… The Clinton 9-10 DY All-Star team made it to the finals of the state tournament down in Florence last Friday… Clinton advanced to the finals coming out of the losers’ bracket and knew they would have to win 2 games to take the championship.. (Narratives by Coach Matt Stewart)

  • Clinton 12 – Park Fields 3…. For the 2nd time in less than 24 hrs it took extra innings for the Clinton All-stars to defeat Parks Field American of Summerville. This time though it wasn’t as close as the All-stars took a 12-3 win in 8 innings when Clinton exploded for 9 runs in the top half of the 8th. RT Corley took the mound and scattered 7 hits giving up only 3 runs over 7 strong innings relying once again on a superb defensive effort from his teammates. Clinton took an early 3-0 lead in the 1st. Justin Copeland singled followed by a double from Davis Wilson scoring Copeland. Wilson also scored on throwing errors by Parks Field. Will Stewart singled, Luke white reached on an error, Austin Copeland reached by catcher’s interference loading the bases. Corley drew a walk scoring Stewart to give Clinton a 3-0 lead after one. The 2nd inning saw neither team score. Luke White tripled with 2 outs in the 3rd only to be left on base by a ground ball to 1st. 4th inning also saw neither team score. Clinton went down quietly in the 5th. Parks Field American would score 3 in the bottom half of the 5th a with double, single and an error to plate their 1st run. A sac fly and a single would round out the scoring for Parks Field tying the game at 3-3. Corley and the Clinton defense kept Parks Field scoreless the rest of the game. The All-stars would not score again until the top of the 8th when they would put 9 runs on the board ending any chance of a Parks Field win. 4 straight walks plated the 1st run, Justin Copeland singled scoring Blake Barker leaving the bases loaded. Davis Wilson then singled scoring Collin Stewart and Zach Fortman. 2 more walks and an Austin Copeland single would score Wil Stewart. Corley reaches on an error scoring Luke White. A sac fly from Davidson Pitts would score Austin Copeland and Corley to end the scoring for Clinton. Davis Wilson would come on to pitch a perfect bottom half of the 8th for the All-stars. Head Coach Matt Stewart would comment after the game: “So proud of the way our kids continue to battle and fight. They have bought into focusing on winning just 1 game and not ever looking ahead. Can’t say enough about RT Corley. He pitched 7 great innings to put us in the championship game and our defense continues to excel. To win in extras yesterday and turn around and do the same today at 10am and play the way they did is outstanding!!!! We are where we want to be, in the finals!!”
  • Delmae (Darlington) 1 – Clinton 0… Great pitching and defense from both teams would be the story of the game until the top half of the 7th when Delmae would get a clutch 2 out base hit from number 11 hitter Justin Carraway for the winning run. Davis Wilson took the mound for Clinton going 5 innings giving up only 2 hits, striking out 2 with no runs. Wil Stewart came on to pitch the 6th and 7th for the All-stars as Wilson had reached his innings limit for the day. Clinton’s defense once again continued their great play holding Delmae scoreless through 6. Neither team could muster much offense. Clinton threatened in the bottom half of the 3rd with RT Corley and Davidson Pitts drawing walks. KJ Adams had a bunt single loading the bases. Corley was tagged out attempting to score from 3rd on a passed ball. 2 strike outs would end the threat. Ty Suggs and Billy Barlow of Delmae would come on to quiet the Clinton bats the rest of the game ending the All-stars state championship run. Excellent pitching and defense from both teams dominated the game. Clinton managed only 1 hit, Delmae just 3, but that was enough to secure the state title. Head Coach Matt Stewart would comment: “Wow what a game neither team would give in. We just ran out of innings today. To lose by 1 run in the state championship certainly hurts but the kids never gave up. It would have been easy to do after all we’ve been through coming out of the loser’s bracket and having to play 3 games in little more than 24 hrs, all in extra innings as well. They have much to be proud of, our goal when we began was to win 1 game 15 times. We played 16 and won 14, just 1 short. I can’t be more proud of them and the coaches with what they accomplished.” Thanks to everyone for all the support and coverage of the kids, they truly deserve it!!!… My thanks to Coach Stewart for keeping us updated!

Big League World Series… The SC Dist. 1 team returns to action tonight at 7:30 in the US semi-Finals of the Little League Big League World Series tonight up in Easley… If I read my standings correctly, they will be playing the team from Florida which represents the Southeast…. SC has played them once back on Saturday and jumped out to an early lead then held on to defeat them 7-6… The winner of this game advances to the finals tomorrow night against the winner of the International Semi-Finals…. That semi-final will be today at 4:00 and features undefeated Puerto Rico taking on once beaten Latin America… Good luck to the SC team and the Laurens players on it!!

Braves: Braves 2 – Padres 0… The Braves finished off their 4-game series with the San Diego Padres in Atlanta yesterday afternoon with a 2-0 win thus allowing them to take the series 3 games to 1… Evan Gattis provided the scoring offense for the Braves as he had a solo homer in the 7th inning and drove in the Braves other run in the 8th with a single… Seems than Evan has returned from his injury in full force… Andrelton Simmons had a stellar day with the glove to help the Braves get out of tight situations… Erwin Santana picked up his 5th win in his last 6 starts as he went 8 innings striking out 11 and walking none… Craig Kimbrel picked up his 32nd save of the season… The Braves start a western road trip today with the first stop being in LA to take on the Dodgers tonight at 10:10 pm

Greenville Drive: Suns 4 – Drive 0… The Greenville Drive were in Maryland last night for game 3 of the 4-game series and the Suns shut down the Drive allowing the Drive only 2 hits as they took a 4-0 win over the Drive… The Drive are now 44-63 on the season and 10-28 since their all-star break… Anyone miss the Greenville Braves?
