Sports Report for Tuesday, 8-5-2014

Just because school has not started back at PC doesn’t necessarily mean things have been quiet on the athletics front… Of course football practice has started but did you know they have named a new softball coach (Britne Stubbs), one of the softball players (Jordan Ashley) was selected to serve on the NCAA Administrative Cabinet (a really big honor), players in several fall sport have been selected for pre-season honors and schedules are up for most all of next season sports… Well if you didn’t all know that remember www.GoBlueHose.com is you one stop for everything worth knowing about PC athletics..

Local Notes:

Braves: The Braves were off last night and it might be a good thing because they are in a 6 game losing streak after being swept by both the Dodgers and the Padres on their current road trip… The Braves will be back in action tonight as they start a short 2 game series in Seattle with the Mariners… First pitch is scheduled for 10:10.

MLB Standings: With about 62 games left in the season, let’s take a look at the MLB standings.

  • National LeagueEast: Due the Braves current losing streak, they now find themselves 3 games behind Washington in the NL East… They will have a chance to do something about that as because they will host Washington in a 3-game series starting this Friday… Miami is in third place 6.5 in back of Washington… Central: Milwaukee leads with a 61-51 record with St. Louis 1 game back in second and Pittsburg 1.5 games back in third…       West: The LA Dodgers have the best record in the NL at 63-49 and lead the NL West… San Francisco is 2 games back and San Diego is third 11.5 games behind the Dodgers.
  • American League… The team with the best record in the AL East (63-48) is Baltimore who leads Toronto by 4 games… The Yankees are third 5 games behind the Orioles… Central: Detroit holds a 4.5 game lead over Kansas City in the AL Central… Cleveland is not far behind in third 5.5 games in back of the Tigers…. West: The team with best record in all of MLB is Oakland in the AL West with a 67-43 record… They only lead the LA Angels by 1 game but 3rd place Seattle (the Braves opponent tonight) trails Oakland by 10.5 games.

Greenville Drive: Greenville 4 – Augusta 3 (15)… The Greenville Drive started a 3-game series with the Augusta GreenJackets last night and it did not finish until after midnight when the Drive scored the winning run in the bottom of the 15th inning to take a 4-3 over the GreenJackets

NASCAR:

  • Sprint Cup Results: If you saw a NASCAR fan yesterday who was walking around with a big smile it’s a good chance that he / she is a Dale Earnhart Jr. fan as Junior picked up his 3rd win of the season at Pocono on Sunday… Basically the race was won in the pits as he may not have had the best car but it was utilized to the maximum… Rounding out the top 5 were Kevin Harvick, Joey Logano, Clint Bowyer and Greg Biffle…
  • Sprint Cup Standing: Now with just 5 races left before they start the Chase for the Sprint Cup, let’s take a look at the driver standings… Three drivers have won 3 races this year and are the top 3… The one with the most points is Dale Earnhart Jr. with 740 followed by Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson… Four drivers with 2 wins each take up spots 4-7… They are Jeff Gordon, Joey Logano, Carl Edwards, and Kevin Harvick… Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Aric Almirola and Kurt Busch each have 1 win each and are in positions 8-11 respectively… Winless drivers finishing out the top 16 at this time are Matt Kenseth, Ryan Newman, Clint Bowyer, Kyle Larson and Greg Biffle.

Carolina Panthers Training Camp schedule… The Panthers had the day off yesterday but will be back at work today at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg and they will start about 3:10… I believe they will be giving away a few Panther T-shirts today… Click on the following link to see the Carolina Panthers Training Camp schedule: Panthers Training Camp Schedule
