Local Notes:  

Football Practices Continue… Well the local high schools are starting their 4th day of practice today so that means it’s time to put on the pads… Football season sure is getting closer.

Countdown to Kickoff… Now many of you local high school football fans are aware that Chanel 7 out of Spartanburg does a countdown to kickoff each night during their sports segment this time of the year and a differ team is highlighted each day… You may want to go ahead and mark you calendars that they will feature the Laurens Raiders next Monday (8-11-14) during the 6:00 pm news and the Clinton Red Devils one week from today (Wednesday 8-13-14) during the 6:00 m sports… Just thought I’d let you know.

  

Other 

Braves: Mariners 4 – Braves 2… The Braves woes continues as their losing streak is now 7 games as they lost to the Seattle Mariners 4-2 last night at Safeco Field in Seattle… The Braves had a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the 4th inning when Seattle struck for 4 runs with a Braves’ error helping them get 2 of those 4 runs… The Braves did manage to score their last run in the top of the 9th when they got 2 of their 6 hits of the night… Jason Heyward led the Braves on offense going 2-4… The Braves finish the short 2-game series with the Mariners this afternoon at 3:40.

Greenville Drive: Greenville 8 – Augusta 4… The Greenville Drive used a 5 run 2nd inning to power them to an 8-4 win over the Augusta GreenJackets last night at Flour Field… The Drive had 3 different players who had 2 hits each as they took a rare second win in a row… They finish their current home stand tonight with the third game of a 3-game series with the GreenJackets.

 

NASCAR:

  • Sprint Cup Results: If you saw a NASCAR fan the last couple of days who was walking around with a big smile it’s a good chance that he / she is a Dale Earnhart Jr. fan as Junior picked up his 3rd win of the season at Pocono on Sunday… Basically the race was won in the pits as he may not have had the best car but it was utilized to the maximum…       Rounding out the top 5 were Kevin Harvick, Joey Logano, Clint Bowyer and Greg Biffle…
  • Sprint Cup Standing: Now with just 5 races left before they start the Chase for the Sprint Cup, let’s take a look at the driver standings… Three drivers have won 3 races this year and are the top 3… The one with the most points is Dale Earnhart Jr. with 740 followed by Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson… Four drivers with 2 wins each take up spots 4-7… They are Jeff Gordon, Joey Logano, Carl Edwards, and Kevin Harvick… Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Aric Almirola and Kurt Busch each have 1 win each and are in positions 8-11 respectively… Winless drivers finishing out the top 16 at this time are Matt Kenseth, Ryan Newman, Clint Bowyer, Kyle Larson and Greg Biffle.

Countdown to Start of Football Season: Hang on football fans it’s only 16 days until Clinton opens up its football season at AC Flora, 22 days until PC opens up at Northern Illinois and 23 days until Laurens host BHP in the start of the Chris Liner era at LDHS.

  • Season Tickets on sale For CHS Football… Season football tickets are now on sale at CHS for the upcoming football season… They can be purchased Mon. – Thur. from 8:00am – 3:30 pm in the business office… You need to ask for Ms. Ginger Eaton (938-1844) and will be $40 per ticket with 1 parking pass per family… For those 65 and older the season ticket is free but a parking pass will cost $20.00… Clinton has 5 home games this season… They are: Sept 12 – Woodruff, Sept. 19 – Laurens, Oct. 3 – Broome (Homecoming), Oct 17 – Union County & Oct 31 – south Pointe (Senior Night).
