Sports Report for Monday, 5-15-2017


  • Championship Tennis Match Rained Out… The SCHSL AAA Boys Tennis Championship match was scheduled to be played at noon on Saturday… On Friday the SCHSL pushed the start of that match back to 3 pm because of the predicted overnight rain in Columbia that was supposed to move through and then clear up Saturday morning… Well as you know, weather fronts move at their pace not the forecasters and when the team arrived in Columbia the rain was still there… After being on for about 30 minutes they loaded up the bus and headed back to Clinton as the match was postponed until a day and time to be determined… Well the date and time were determined yesterday and the Red Devils will get back on the bus and head down to the Cayce Tennis Center tomorrow for a 6 pm match with Hanahan… Please make plans to go down & support the team if at all possible….   • Pearson and Tribble Sign Letters of Intent… Last Friday two senior student athletes at CHS signed letters of intent to continue their education and athletic careers in the auditorium filled with family, friends, teammates and faculty… First Tymori Tribble signed his letter of intent with PC where he will have a preferred walk-on status with the basketball team… Then Makayla Pearson signed to attend Erskine and continue her softball career… Before the signings, AD Nickie Templeton was quick to point out to all present that this occasion could not have taken place without both these student athletes taking care of the student part in the classroom and challenged all there to put forth the effort in class and out of it to be able someday be able to sit on stage and do the same… Congratulations to both these fine young people…. Braves… The Braves had a 6-game losing streak going into a 3-game series down in Miami with the Marlins

  • Friday: Braves 8 – Marlins 4… On Friday, the Braves used a 6 run seventh inning to break there losing streak as they took an 8-4 win over the Marlins… Braves catcher Tyler Fowler picked up his first homerun of the season a 2-run shot in the second inning and also drove in 2 more of the Braves runs… For more information on this game, click here.
  • Saturday: Braves 3 – Marlins 1…. On Saturday the Braves did something that has been hard for them to do the last couple of years and that is win two in a row as they defeated the Marlins 3-1… Nick Markakis led the Braves going 3-4 with an RBI while Julio Teheran went 6 scoreless innings striking out 4 and walking 2 while giving up no runs and just 3 hits to get the win… For more information on this game, click here.
  • Sunday: Marlins 3 – Braves 1… Yesterday the Marlins avoided the sweep by taking a 3-1 win over the Bravos…The Braves lead 1-0 going into the bottom of the 7th where the Fish struck for 3 runs and held the Braves scoreless the rest of the way to take the win… For more information on this game, click here…. The Braves are heads north of the border today for a short 2-game series with the Blue Jays.

Drive… The Greenville Drive finished their 3-game series with the Lakewood BlueClaws on Friday and then moved on to Salisbury, Md. Saturday tom start a 4-game series with the Delmarva Shorebirds.

  • Friday: Lakewood 3 – Greenville 1… On Friday the Drive dropped a 3-1 decision to the BlueClaws thus allowing the BlueClaws to take the series 2 games to 1… Greenville led early but The Claws scored 1 in the 5th and 2 in the 6th to take the win…. For more information on this game, click here.
  • Saturday: Greenville 3 – Delmarva 2… The Drive rebounded on Saturday to take a 3-2 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds in the first game of their 4 game series… The Birds scored first in the third inning making it 1 -0 but the Drive put 3 on the board in the fifth and Delmarva answered with one ion the bottom of the same inning but could get no closer… For more information on this game, click here
  • Sunday: Greenville 12 – Delmarva 3… The yesterday the Drive assured themselves of at least a splint in the 4-game series with the Shorebirds as they but an old fashion whipping on them with a 12-3 win… Greenville pounded out 14 hits to the Shorebirds 10 scoring runs in bunches and without any homeruns among their 14 hits….   • Rhythm on the Rails… The City of Clinton’s Rhythm on the Rails is coming up this Friday and Saturday and as usual there will be free musical entertainment all day Saturday including the Jake barley band and The tams… This year there will also be a sanction BBQ contest and sales as well as other food sales and merchandise… There will also be other activities such as a model train displays and rides… You can purchase a $5:00 wristbands for all rides, inflatables and the rock wall… Go ahead and make plans to come on to the City of Clinton’s Rhythm on the Rails this weekend.
  • Laurens Adult Basketball League… The Laurens Adult Basketball League (LABL) will kick off its inaugural season on June 5, 2017…The LABL will take the first six teams to register for the 2017 season. The LABL is open to teams consisting of players ages 16 and up… Teams must submit a roster with a maximum of 10 players before their first game. All players must have matching jerseys with visible numbers… Games will be played at The Ridge at Laurens on Monday’s and Wednesday’s from June 5 to June 28. Game times will be 6pm, 7pm and 8pm. The top 4 teams will advance to the semifinals on Thursday, July 6 with the championship game being played on Monday, July 10… Registration is open now and will continue until Friday, May 26 at The Ridge at Laurens… The cost to register is $100 per team… Each team will also be responsible for paying a $30 referee fee at each game… There will be a mandatory team captains meeting on Wednesday, May 31 at 6pm at The Ridge at Laurens… For more information, contact Jason Pridgen at or 864-681-7275.
  • CHS Athletic Booster Golf Tournament… Athletic Director Nickie Templeton and Booster Club President Buddy Bridges have released information about the 2107 CHS Booster Club Golf Tournament… This year, the tournament will be held at Musgrove Mill, on July 27…  Registration begins at 8:30…  For more information: CHS Golf Tourney Brochure 2017… This is a major fundraiser for our Red Devil student-athletes, and it is also a lot of fun… GO BIG RED!
