Sports Report for Friday, 6-2-2017

PC Notes:

  • Baseball Honors… Recently it was announced that Presbyterian College placed four players on All-Big South teams, the most since PC joined the league. Catcher TJ Richardson was named first team All-Big South with infielder Glen Casaceli earning a spot on the second team and pitchers Ryan Hedrick and Brian Kehner receiving honorable mention honors. AJ Priaulx earned a spot on the All-Academic Team for the second straight season… Of course this comes after PC finished the seaon with a 29-27 record overall and 15-9 in Big South play which allowed them to finish third in the Bid South standings their highest since joining the conference… For more about this, click here… Congratulations to those players.
  • Softball Honors… The PC softball team had one of its members pick up post season honors also… senior shortstop Hope Rogers (Gaston, S.C.) was named to the Big South All-Academic Team, as was voted on by the Big South’s sports information directors… Rogers led the team in batting average, slugging percentage, runs scored, hits, RBI, doubles, triples, total bases, and assists… She was in the top 15 in the Big South in batting average and triples… Rogers also finished third in PC’s Division I record book in runs and first in career hits and doubles… This season she also moved to first in career home runs with 28.

College Notes:

  • NCAA Baseball Regionals … The NCAA actually got started yesterday as out in Stanford as Cal State Fullerton defeated BYU 13-2 and Stanford defeated Sacramento State 10-0… All the other regionals get started today and if you want to keep up with all the action you can click here and it will take you to the interactive bracket the NCAA has posted on its website… You can also find a posting in the Featured Sports section on our homepage at wlbg.com that has links to not only the baseball bracket but also the softball bracket which is down to the final 8.
  • Clemson Regional…. The Clemson Regional kicks off at noon today as the #2 seeded Commodores of Vanderbilt take on the #3 seed Red Storm of St. John’s… That game can be seen on the SEC Network and also on WatchESPN… Then at 7:00 pm tonight the #1 seeded Clemson Tigers will take on the #4 seeded Spartans of UNC-Greensboro… If you want to watch this game you will have to do it on ESPN3… If you click here it will take you to a posting on the Clemson Athletic website where you can find all sorts of information about the four teams, the schedule and results… Good luck to the Tigers!

  • Braves… The Braves were off last night but will return to action tonight in Cincinnati where they will start a 3-game series with the Reds… The Braves are now 22-29 on the season and find themselves in third place in the NL East 10.5 games behind the division leading Washington National and a .5 games behind the second place Mets.
  • Drive 3 – RiverDogs 2… The Greenville Drive started a 4-game series with the Charleston RiverDogs last night on a positive note as they took a 3-2 win… The RiverDogs got on the board first scoring both their runs in the first inning and the Drive tied the game with a pair of runs in the fourth inning… The Drive scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning when first baseman Tucker Tubbs led the inning off with a solo homer.

  • Laurens Adult Basketball League… The Laurens Adult Basketball League (LABL) will kick off its inaugural season in early June… The LABL is open to teams consisting of players ages 16 and up… Teams must submit a roster with a maximum of 10 players before their first game. All players must have matching jerseys with visible numbers… Games will be played at The Ridge at Laurens on Monday’s and Wednesday’s from early June to early July. Game times will be 6pm, 7pm and 8pm. The top 4 teams will advance to the semifinals on Thursday, July 6 with the championship game being played on Monday, July 10… Registration is open now and will continue until Friday, May 26 at The Ridge at Laurens… The cost to register is $100 per team… Each team will also be responsible for paying a $30 referee fee at each game… Anyone interested in fielding a team is invited to attend an informational meeting on Wednesday, June 7 at 6pm at The Ridge at Laurens…  For more information, contact Jason Pridgen at laurensprd@yahoo.com or 864-681-7275.
  • Raider Youth Baseball Camp… Coach Patterson, his staff and both current and former players will be conducting a youth baseball camp July 10-113… The camp is open to all youth in the community between the ages of 7-13…. The basic fundamentals including throwing, catching, hitting, base running, and pitching will be covered… Water and snacks for the campers will be provided with plenty of breaks between periods each day… The camp will be held at Ed Prescott Field between the hours of 5:00 – 7:30 pm and the cost is $40 (cash only) per camper… If you click here you will find more information as to what you should bring and a form that needs to be completed and signed by the parents and brought to the camp when you register that morning… Raider Baseball wants to provide our youth baseball players with the proper instructions on how to become a successful baseball player, and also an idea of what it takes to be RAIDER!
  • MLB All-Star Game Ballot… The MLB All-Star Game is scheduled to be played in Miami on July 11th… If you would like to vote for your favorite player(s) you may do so by clicking here which will take you to the MLB website’s page where the ballot is located.
  • CHS Athletic Booster Golf Tournament… Athletic Director Nickie Templeton and Booster Club President Buddy Bridges have released information about the 2107 CHS Booster Club Golf Tournament… This year, the tournament will be held at Musgrove Mill, on July 27…  Registration begins at 8:30…  For more information: CHS Golf Tourney Brochure 2017… This is a major fundraiser for our Red Devil student-athletes, and it is also a lot of fun… GO BIG RED!
