Sports Report for Monday, 6-12-2017

Local Notes: 

The Family YMCAs of Clinton and Laurens want to remind you that they have a full summer of specialty camps and activities available for the youth of our area… If you go to the WLBG home page and look down in the Featured Sports section on the right side toward the bottom of the page, you will find a posting that has information about these camps at both YMCAs… The next camp at the Clinton YMCA is a baseball camp June 19-23 that you must sign up for by June 16th… The next camp at the Laurens YMCA is an archery camp June 13-15… For more details on either of the camps check the posting in the featured Sports section…the way there is also information about swimming lessons at the Clinton YMCA also.

Tigers to Visit White House Today… In case any of the Tiger fans out there have not heard this, I’ll briefly mention that this Tiger football team that won the National Championship this past season will be headed to Washington DC today to meet with President Trump at 3:00 pm… I think it will be broadcast on ESPN live and Channel 4 WYFF says they will be carrying it also on their website… Hope they have fun, they deserve it!

Braves… The Braves played host to the Mets over the weekend in a 4-game series at Sun Trust Park.

  • Friday: Braves 3 – Mets 2… The Braves and the Mets were tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the 9th inning when Dansby Swanson turned a single into a double and then Rio Ruiz brought him home for a walk-off win… The Braves outhit the Mets 9-5 in the win.
  • Saturday-Game 1: Mets 6 – Braves 1… In the first game of a double header on Saturday, the Mets broke open a close game scoring 4 runs in the top of the 9th and then going on to defeat the Braves 6-1… Yoenis Cespedes had a grand slam in the Mets half of the 9th inning… The Braves second baseman Brandon Phillips had a solo shot in the 8th inning.
  • Saturday-Game-2: Mets 8 – Braves 1… In the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday 3 Mets pitchers held the Braves to just 5 hits and 1 run while the Mets pounded out 12 hits 2 of which were homers off 4 Brave pitches as the Mets took an 8-1 win.
  • Sunday: Mets 2 – Braves 1… In the series finale yesterday the Mets made it three in a row as they lost to the Mets 2-1… Again the Braves offense was almost AWOL as they collected just 6 hits to the Mets 8… The Braves will now travel to Washington for a 3-game series with the Nationals starting tonight. 

The MLB 2017 Draft starts tonight at 6:00 pm… A lot of die-hard baseball fans will be tuning into the MLB Network or logging onto to keep up with it… I am sure more than a few college coaches will be doing the same to see if they are likely to be losing commitments. … If you click here it will carry you to the MLB website where there posting all about the draft and you can keep up with it using links on that page.

Drive… The Greenville Drive were down in Augusta over the weekend as they started a 4-game series with the GreenJackets.

  • Friday: Drive 5 – Augusta 0… The Drive opened the series on Friday night in a positive way as the blanked the GreenJackets taking a 5-0 win… The Drive outhit Augusta 10-6 and took advantage of the 1 walk issued by the GreenJackets in producing one of their runs.
  • Saturday: Augusta 8 – Drive 1… On Saturday Augusta rebounded taking an 8-1 win… Augusta got their 8 runs on 8 hits and some Drive miscues while the Drive bats stayed on the bus getting only 1 hit and using walks and the one hit to get their run.
  • Sunday: Augusta 2 – Drive 1… Yesterday the GreenJackets and the Drive got into a pitcher’s duel where both teams produced 5 hits each… However the GreenJackets were able to get 2 runs out of those 5 hits while the Drive managed only 1….The teams will finish their series in Augusta today. 

NBA… A quick reminder to all the NBA (Not really Basketball Association) that game 5 of the finals takes place out in California tonight at 9:00 pm as the Golden State warriors take on the Clevland cavaliers… The Warriors lead the series 3 games to 1 and can clinch the title with a win tonight.

  • Raider Youth Baseball Camp… Coach Patterson, his staff and both current and former players will be conducting a youth baseball camp July 10-113… The camp is open to all youth in the community between the ages of 7-13…. The basic fundamentals including throwing, catching, hitting, base running, and pitching will be covered… Water and snacks for the campers will be provided with plenty of breaks between periods each day… The camp will be held at Ed Prescott Field between the hours of 5:00 – 7:30 pm and the cost is $40 (cash only) per camper… If you click here you will find more information as to what you should bring and a form that needs to be completed and signed by the parents and brought to the camp when you register that morning… Raider Baseball wants to provide our youth baseball players with the proper instructions on how to become a successful baseball player, and also an idea of what it takes to be RAIDER!
  • MLB All-Star Game Ballot… The MLB All-Star Game is scheduled to be played in Miami on July 11th… If you would like to vote for your favorite player(s) you may do so by clicking here which will take you to the MLB website’s page where the ballot is located.
  • CHS Athletic Booster Golf Tournament… Athletic Director Nickie Templeton and Booster Club President Buddy Bridges have released information about the 2107 CHS Booster Club Golf Tournament… This year, the tournament will be held at Musgrove Mill, on July 27…  Registration begins at 8:30…  For more information: CHS Golf Tourney Brochure 2017… This is a major fundraiser for our Red Devil student-athletes, and it is also a lot of fun… GO BIG RED!

2017 PC Sports Camps… PC has different sports camps throughout the summer… Below are the next couple of camps that I know of being held at PC.

  • Blue Hose Select Baseball Camp (Session I)… June 13, 9:00am – 4:00 pm… This camp is open to any and all entrants who have started classes for the 9th grade through 12th grade… Additionally, our camp is open to junior college players…. The camp will consist of intensive instruction, an extensive pro-style workout, BP and scrimmages…Dual position players/pitchers are asked to display their abilities both on the mound and their secondary position…The cost of the camp is $175.00… For more information on how to register and what to bring, click here….   • PC 2017 Elite Residential Boys Soccer Camp… July 13 – 16… Boys 11-18The Presbyterian College Elite Residential Camp is intended to put college-bound elite high school soccer player in the best possible environment in this intense four-day camp. During the day, camper will be in high-level technical and tactical training session conducted by the Presbyterian College staff or other high level college coaches from the area. In the evening players will be coached and evaluated in 11 vs.11 match play….   • PC Women’s Soccer Camp… June 22-24… Ages 10-14… PC Girls Soccer Camp is a comprehensive soccer training experience… Our highly trained coaches address each campers needs in a challenging but enjoyable environment…  Our hope is that each camper leaves camp feeling that they learned, improved, and had a wonderful time… For more information on how to register and what to bring, click here.
  • Elite Football Camp…July 15th, 10:00– 3:00 pm… The Coach Tommy Spangler Elite Football Camp is designed for high school juniors and seniors to receive individual instruction from the Presbyterian College coaching staff…  Campers will receive instruction in Fundamentals, Skills, and Techniques as well as one-on-one drills…  Our camps are designed to make each participant a better football player while creating a fun and competitive environment….
