Clinton 11-12 All-Stars Win District Tournament

  • Clinton’s 11-12 All-Stars outlasted Edgefield County 5-4 in 7 innings Tuesday night to claim the Dixie Youth District 3 Tournament title at the Clinton YMCA.  With the win Clinton advances to the Dixie Youth State Tournament in Hartsville, SC July 14-19… Edgefield opened the scoring in the bottom of the first putting up 2 runs off a single and a fielder’s choice.  Clinton responded in the top of the 2nd scoring 1 run off a 2 out single from Wil Stewart. .. Both Teams were held scoreless in the 3rd inning.  The All-Stars added 1 run in the 4th inning on a solo HR by RT Corley.  Wilson Wages led off the 5th with a double, stole 3rd and scored on passed ball to put the All-Stars up 3-2..  Luke White was hit by a pitch to start the top of the 6th, stole 2nd and advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch.  Zach Fortman delivered a 2 strike single to score White giving Clinton a 4-2 lead entering the bottom of the inning… The All-Stars were 3 outs away from the district title.  Pitching for Clinton, Fortman quickly recorded the first 2 outs of the bottom of the 6th off a fly ball and a fielder’s choice which put Edgefield County’s leadoff hitter Drew Johnson at 1st base.  Number 2 hitter Chandler Mims worked a 2-1 count from Fortman and on the next pitch sent it over the right center field fence for a 2 run homer tying the game at 4-4… Fortman would record a strike out to end the inning… In Clinton’s half of the 7th, Corley led off with a single and would come around to score off another single from Austin Copeland giving Clinton a 5-4 lead entering the bottom of the 7th… Justin Copeland came on in relief of Fortman for the All-Stars pitching a scoreless bottom half, finally securing the District 3 title for Clinton…Clinton was led offensively by RT Corley 2-3 with a HR ,1 RBI and 2 runs scored, Wilson Wages 2-3 with a double.  Zach Fortman pitched 6 complete innings giving up 4 earned runs off 9 hits while striking out 4. Justin Copeland pitched the 7th inning allowing no hits and striking out 1…Coach Matt Stewart commented “Wow, what a game!  Neither team would back down, both teams gave everything they had tonight.  Can’t say enough about Edgefield’s Chandler Mims, he is a special player who can single handedly control and win a baseball game.  His pitching completely kept us off balance the entire game and delivering a 2 out last inning HR to tie the game is unbelievable.  We just managed to scratch across enough runs off him to win, it wasn’t easy” Head Coach Matt Stewart commented afterward.  Very proud of the way my guys hung in there an battled tonight.  They never gave up.  This team’s heart and will to compete is second to none.  For some on this team it’s their 6th straight district title and for the majority it’s their 5th straight.  These kids, every one of them, are extremely special players and more importantly great young men.  Remember their names, you will continue to read about them in the future!!!’… The team opens State Tournament play on July 15 at 9am against a team to be determined.
