Sports Report for Monday, 7-23-2017

Local Notes:

Barry Atkinson No Longer Head Trainer at LDHS… It came as a shock to many Raider fans Friday when they found out that Barry Atkinson will not be on the sidelines and courtside at LDHS athletic events this coming school year… Barry has served the student athletes of LDHS and visiting school with some of the best care around as he has been since 1981… For the last several years Barry has been retired as a teacher and served as head trainer only at a reduced salary… According to other media reports Barry was asked to teach again at his present salary or take a pay cut to serve as head trainer only… At that point the Barry decided it was his time to go…. Recently Barry was inducted into the first class of the Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame and during his distinguished career has been awarded many other honors… As with many others, I will truly miss him and wish him nothing but the best as he moves into the next phase of his life.

Braves… The Braves finished their long road trip over the weekend with a 3 game series with the Athletics out in Oakland

  • Friday: Braves 3 – Athletics 1… On Friday the two teams hooked up in a pitcher’s duel and the Braves held a 1-0 lead going into the top of the 9th inning… The Braves plated 2 runs in the top of the 9th and then held on to take a 3-1 win… The Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz (Ful-ta-nev-ich) went 8 innings giving up 1 hit (a homer in the bottom of the 9th before being knotted) while striking out 8 and walking 4.
  • Saturday: Braves 4 – A’s 3… On Saturday there was a little more scoring in the game and again the Braves took a one-run win this time by a score of 7-3… Dansby Swanson had an RBI-double to provide the winning run for the Braves… Swanson had 2 of the Braves 7 hits and had 2 RBIs.
  • Sunday: Braves 4 – A’s 3 (12)… Yesterday the Braves were able to pull the brooms out of the bat bags as they again took a 4-3 win to sweep the Athletics in the series but it was not easy as the game went 12 innings… The game was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation and both teams scored a singe run in the 11th inning to make it 3-3… The Braves scored the winning run in the top of the 12th inning on a line drive homer to center field off the bat of Kurt Suzuki… The homer in the 12th was Suzuki’s second solo homer of the game… The Braves are off tonight as they travel home to start a short 2-gane seies wit the Astros tomorrow night at Sun Trust Park.

Drive… The Drive returned home to Flour Field last Friday night to start a 4-game series with the Lexington Legends..

  • Friday: Legends 17 – Drive 7… If you like a baseball game with a lot of offense than you should have been at Flour Filed last Friday night as the two teams combined for 32 hits and 24 runs but the only problem for Drive fans is that the Legends had 20 of the hits and 17 of the runs as they took a 17-7 win over the Drive… The game was only 1-0 Legends going into the top of the 3rd inning where they broke it open scoring 8 runs.
  • Saturday: Drive 5 – Legends 2On Saturday the Drive bounced back scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning and then going on to a 5-2 win… Both teams had 9 hits and the Legends only error of the game aided the Drive in scoring at least one of their runs in the first inning.
  • Sunday: Legends 8 – Drive 4Yesterday the Legends had a big 5th inning where they scored 6 runs and then went on to take an 8-4 win over the Drive… If the Drive want to break even in the 4-game series they will have to beat the Legends tonight at Flour Field in the series finale.
