Local Notes: 

Laurens 10-11 Little League All-Stars Win State Championship

  • Laurens 15 – Northwood 5 (5)The Laurens LL 10-11 All-Star team took care of business last night as they defeated Northwood 15-5 in 5 innings to capture the SC Championship and punch their ticket to the Tournament of State Champions later this month in North Carolina… Laurens jumped on top quickly scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the first inning… In that inning, Jonah Hogge, EJ Grant, Brent Young and Jaeden Goodwin all had RBI producing hits… Goodwin’s was an inside the park homer… Northwood got two of those runs back in the top of the second to make it 7-2 Laurens… Laurens got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning when Zay Pulley led off the inning with the single and was at third with two outs when he was able to steal home…. Laurens added a pair of runs in 3rd on an RBI single by Zay Pulley and on a Northwood error… Laurens added a single run in the 4th on bases loaded walk to CJ Threatt scoring Harrison Moore from third…. Northwood did not go quietly as they picked up their last 3 runs in the top of the 5th inning to make it 11-5 Laurens… Laurens picked up the 4 runs needed to end the game on the 10-run rule in the bottom of the 5th on a Northwood error, a run producing double by Jaeden Goodwin and a RBI single by CJ Threatt to drive in the winning run… Laurens had 13 hits with 5 different player getting 2 hits each… Zay Pulley picked up the win going 4⅓ innings giving up the 5 runs on 7 hits… Congratulations to the team!  See Photo slide show below.

  • SEC Media Days… Well the SEC has been holding their annual Football Media Days out Hoover, Alabama since Monday and it wraps up today… The last three schools to go before the media today are South Carolina, Ole Miss and Auburn… Now if you would like to go to the SEC web site where you can get quotes from the coaches and other information about what has gone on so far, click here.
  • ACC Media Days… Now the ACC will start their Media days today up in Charlotte… Dabo Swinney / Clemson will hold stage late this afternoon…. For more information about the ACC Media days, click here

  • Braves… The Braves were off last night and resume the second half of their season tomorrow night as they start a 3-game series with the D-Backs at Sun Trust Park
  • Drive 12 – Intimidators 2… The Greenville Drive returned home last night to start a 3-game series with the Kannapolis Intimidators and they got off to a pretty good start as the Drive took a 12-2 win… The Drive led 8-0 before the Intimidators finally got on the board getting their only two runs in the 5th inning… The Drive pounded out 16 hits with right fielder Granger Studdard going 4 for 5 on the night with 3 RBIs.

 

This & That:

  • Raider Softball Clinics… Coach Haley Register Satterfield the new head coach of the of the Laurens Raider varsity softball team will be holding FREE softball clinics at LDHS this summer… The clinics are open to all young ladies between the ages of 8 and 13 who are interested in learning to play softball and depending on participation they may lead to a travel team being formed this summer… The clinics will be on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between the hours of 7:00 – 8:15 pm… The clinics will end July 31st and there will not be any clinics during the July 4th week.… Each young lady needs to bring a glove, bat, tennis shoes and cleats to practice… If you have any questions about this, contact coach Satterfield at hmregister@laurens55.org..
  • Laurens Middle School Football Meeting… There has been a lot of teacher and coaching turnover in Laurens School District 55 since the end of the last school year and LMS has not been immune to that syndrome where coaches are concerned… That is why on Thursday, July 20th they would like all students who will be in the 7th and 8th grade at LMS who plan on playing football this fall to come to meeting at the LMS football field where they will have the opportunity to meet the new coaching staff and AD… Parents are more than welcome to come and the new staff will be glad to answer any questions from students or parent… The meeting will start at 6:00 pm and again it will be at the LMS football field on the 20th of this month.
  • CHS Athletic Booster Golf Tournament… Athletic Director Nickie Templeton and Booster Club President Buddy Bridges have released information about the 2107 CHS Booster Club Golf Tournament… This year, the tournament will be held at Musgrove Mill, on July 27…  Registration begins at 8:30…  For more information: CHS Golf Tourney Brochure 2017… This is a major fundraiser for our Red Devil student-athletes, and it is also a lot of fun… GO BIG RED!

  • Clinton YMCA: The next camp at the Clinton YMCA is a basketball camp July 17-20 for boys and girls ages 8-12 that you must sign up for by July 14th … Click here for more information.
  • Laurens YMCA: The next camp at the Laurens YMCA is a Tie Die camp for youth ages 7 and up that is to be held July 18-20… The campers will be introduced to T-ball, flag football, soccer, gaga ball & disc golf… Click here for more information.
  • Free Swimming Lessons @ Laurens YMCA… The Laurens Family YMCA along with Kennedy Mortuary will be sponsoring FREE swimming lessons for parents and children who are both looking to learn how to swim together starting next Monday July 17th… It will run Monday thru Thursday and will be 30 minutes long each day… There are different time periods based on the age of the child (3-6, 7-10 and 11-15)….   • Youth Volleyball Camp… There one more volleyball camp starting Monday, July 17th … The camp will have LDHS coaches and players as instructors… The cost is $60 for each camp and they will be held at The Ridge from 9:00 am – noon… This camp will be for youth ages 11-14… The camp will run through Thursday and will be held at The Ridge
  • Laurens Parks & Recreation Youth Football Camp….The Laurens Parks and Recreation Dept. is having a youth football camp on July 22nd for youth ages 7-12… The camp is designed to teach the proper fundamentals of football and to give the attendees experience and knowledge of what it takes to make it to the NFS… Autwan Edwards, Rahim Abdullah and Airese Currie all of whom are NFL draftees will be coaching the camp… Ramon Robinson an elite QB coach in the southeast will also be one of the coaches… The cost of the camp is $65 and those who register will automatically be registered for the Parks and Recreation youth tackle football program this fall….You do noy have to be a resident of Laurens to attend and you do not have to play in the youth football program this fall to attend.
  • Basketball Camp… This camp will be July 31 – August 2 and is open to youth ages 9-13… The cost of this camp will be $40 and will be held at The Ridge from 9:00 am – noon each day.

2017 PC Sports Camps… PC has different sports camps throughout the summer… Below are the next couple of camps that I know of being held at PC.

  • PC 2017 Elite Residential Boys Soccer Camp…       July 13 – 16… Boys 11-18The Presbyterian College Elite Residential Camp is intended to put college-bound elite high school soccer player in the best possible environment in this intense four-day camp. During the day, camper will be in high-level technical and tactical training session conducted by the Presbyterian College staff or other high level college coaches from the area. In the evening players will be coached and evaluated in 11 vs.11 match play…. It is open to boys ages 11-18 and the cost is $450.00 (more or less) for each camper… For more information on how to register and what to bring, click here.
  • Elite Football Camp…July 15th, 10:00– 3:00 pm… The Coach Tommy Spangler Elite Football Camp is designed for high school juniors and seniors to receive individual instruction from the Presbyterian College coaching staff…  Campers will receive instruction in Fundamentals, Skills, and Techniques as well as one-on-one drills…  Our camps are designed to make each participant a better football player while creating a fun and competitive environment….
