Sports Report for Monday, 7-17-2017

Local Notes: 

Clinton DY 11-12 All-Stars Defeat Hilton Head 6-0

  • Clinton’s 11-12 All-stars opened state tournament play in Hartsville on Saturday morning at 9am beating Hilton Head 6-0 behind a dominant pitching performance from Luke White. White pitched a complete game shutout allowing only 4 hits and striking out 8… The All-stars put one run on the board in the top of the 3rd inning off an RBI single from Bryce Young scoring Zane Mclendon… They would add 2 more in the 4th.  Justin Copeland led off the inning with a single and would steal 2nd.  Landon Vo drew a walk and both runners would advance on a wild pitch.  Another wild pitch would score Copeland and move Vo to 3rd. Wil Stewart delivered a 2 out double to right center field scoring Vo putting the All-stars up 3-0 after 4 innings.  The 6th inning would see the All-stars add 3 more runs.  Austin Copeland and Justin Copeland singled.  Austin would eventually score on a passed ball.  With one out, Wilson Wages drove a 1-1 pitch over the right center field fence for a 2 run home run making the final score 6-0…Offensively Clinton was led by Justin Copeland 2-2, 2 runs scored, Wilson Wages 1-3, HR, 2 RBI’s, Wil Stewart 1-2, 2B, RBI, and Bryce Young 1-2, 1B, RBI…”Hilton Head is a great team, they battled and their pitching was excellent…  Kept us off balance the whole game.” Head Coach Matt Stewart commented afterward.  “Good to get that 1st win.  Proud of the guys for doing what the team needed to win.  We came out a little flat early on and that’s my fault for not getting the team properly focused.  Extremely proud of Luke White, his pitching kept us in it when our bats were struggling.  Hopefully we can come out tomorrow and swing it better against a really good Greer team.”….With the win Clinton advances to play Greer on Sunday at 6pm at Byerly Park in Hartsville, SC.

Clinton DY 9-10 Minors All-stars Drop opening game to Summerville 9-4

  • Clinton’s 9-10 All-stars were also in action last Saturday and the news on their opening game is not as good as they fell 9-4 to Summerville… Clinton struck first getting all 4 of their runs in the bottom of the first inning but could not hold the lead… Summerville had 8 hits to Clinton’s 7 but Clinton had 4 errors which hurt their cause.

Braves… The Braves returned to action last Friday night as they started a 3-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks at Sun Trust Park.

  • Friday: Braves 4 – D-backs 3… The Braves got on the board first Friday night but found themselves trailing 3-2 going into the bottom of the 8th inning where they put 2 runs on the board to take the lead and then held the D-backs scoreless in the 9th to take a 4-3 win… Freddie Freeman picked up his 17th home run of the season a solo shot in the 6th inning…
  • Saturday: Braves 8 – D-backs 5… On Saturday the Braves used a 4-run 6th inning to break open a close game and then go to take an 8-5 win over the D-backs… Two of the Braves 14 hits were solo homers, one by second baseman Brandon Phillips and pinch it homer by Jace Peterson.
  • Sunday: Braves 7 – D-backs 1… The Braves got the brooms out as they swept the D-back by winning yesterday’s game by a score of 7-1… The Braves were leading 2-0 when they broke the game open scoring 4 runs in the 3rd inning and never looked back… The Braves had only 7 hits to the D-backs 4 but again 2 of them were homeruns… Both Matt Kemp and Matt Adams had a solo homer in the Braves’ 4-run third inning… The sweep of the D-backs allowed the Braves to even their season record at 45-45…. The will start a 3-game series with the Cubs in Atlanta tonight.

Drive… The Greenville Drive were at home over the weekend as they finished up a series with Kannapolis on Friday and started one with Hickory on Saturday.

  • Friday: Drive 2 – Intimidators 0… On Friday the Drive completed their 3-game home series with the Kannapolis Intimidators by taking a 2-0 win in a pitchers’ duel… The Drive had a total of 6 hits while the Intimidators had just 2…. The win gave the Drive a sweep of the Intimidators in the 3-game series.
  • Saturday: Drive 7 – Crawdads 4… The Drive started a 3-game series with the Hickory Crawdads on Saturday at Flour Field…This game was scoreless for 4.5 innings when the Drive got on the board with 2 runs and added another in the 6th but the Crawdads tied the game in the 7th… The Drive immediately took the lead in the bottom of the inning plating 4 runs thanks to a grand slam by Bobby Dalbec and then went on to a 7-4 win…
  • Sunday: Crawdads 3 – Drive 1… The Drive’s win on Saturday was them a 7 game winning streak but that came to an end yesterday as the Crawdads rebounded from their loss on Saturday to take a 3-1 win over the Drive… They did outhit the Drive 12-9 but more importantly 2 of their hits were homers.

  • Raider Softball Clinics… Coach Haley Register Satterfield the new head coach of the of the Laurens Raider varsity softball team will be holding FREE softball clinics at LDHS this summer… The clinics are open to all young ladies between the ages of 8 and 13 who are interested in learning to play softball and depending on participation they may lead to a travel team being formed this summer… The clinics will be on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between the hours of 7:00 – 8:15 pm… The clinics will end July 31st and there will not be any clinics during the July 4th week.… Each young lady needs to bring a glove, bat, tennis shoes and cleats to practice… If you have any questions about this, contact coach Satterfield at hmregister@laurens55.org..
  • Laurens Middle School Football Meeting… There has been a lot of teacher and coaching turnover in Laurens School District 55 since the end of the last school year and LMS has not been immune to that syndrome where coaches are concerned… That is why on Thursday, July 20th they would like all students who will be in the 7th and 8th grade at LMS who plan on playing football this fall to come to meeting at the LMS football field where they will have the opportunity to meet the new coaching staff and AD… Parents are more than welcome to come and the new staff will be glad to answer any questions from students or parent… The meeting will start at 6:00 pm and again it will be at the LMS football field on the 20th of this month.
  • CHS Athletic Booster Golf Tournament… Athletic Director Nickie Templeton and Booster Club President Buddy Bridges have released information about the 2107 CHS Booster Club Golf Tournament… This year, the tournament will be held at Musgrove Mill, on July 27…  Registration begins at 8:30…  For more information: CHS Golf Tourney Brochure 2017… This is a major fundraiser for our Red Devil student-athletes, and it is also a lot of fun… GO BIG RED!
  • Clinton YMCA Fall Flag Football and Cheerleading… Registration is now open for flag football and cheerleading at the Clinton Family YMCA… For flag football there will be 3 age groupings 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12…. Cheerleading is open to youth in grades K-6….   • Clinton YMCA: No further summer camps… See above for flag football and cheerleading information.
  • Laurens YMCA: The next camp at the Laurens YMCA is a Tie Die camp for youth ages 7 and up that is to be held July 18-20… The campers will be introduced to T-ball, flag football, soccer, gaga ball & disc golf… Click here for more information.
  • Free Swimming Lessons @ Laurens YMCA… The Laurens Family YMCA along with Kennedy Mortuary will be sponsoring FREE swimming lessons for parents and children who are both looking to learn how to swim together starting next Monday July 17th… It will run Monday thru Thursday and will be 30 minutes long each day… There are different time periods based on the age of the child (3-6, 7-10 and 11-15)….   • Laurens Parks & Recreation Youth Football Camp….The Laurens Parks and Recreation Dept. is having a youth football camp on July 22nd for youth ages 7-12… The camp is designed to teach the proper fundamentals of football and to give the attendees experience and knowledge of what it takes to make it to the NFS… Autwan Edwards, Rahim Abdullah and Airese Currie all of whom are NFL draftees will be coaching the camp… Ramon Robinson an elite QB coach in the southeast will also be one of the coaches… The cost of the camp is $65 and those who register will automatically be registered for the Parks and Recreation youth tackle football program this fall….You do noy have to be a resident of Laurens to attend and you do not have to play in the youth football program this fall to attend.
  • Basketball Camp… This camp will be July 31 – August 2 and is open to youth ages 9-13… The cost of this camp will be $40 and will be held at The Ridge from 9:00 am – noon each day.

2017 PC Sports Camps… PC has different sports camps throughout the summer… Below are the next couple of camps that I know of being held at PC.

  • Boys Evening Day Soccer Camp… August 4-6…Boys 5-15… This camp is designed to help young men improve their skills at any level through teaching fundamentals and game play… For more information on how to register and what to bring, click here.
