Local Notes:

Clinton 11-12 DY All-Stars… We need to catch up on how the team is doing in the state tournament down in Hartsville

  • Monday (1): Greer 6 – Clinton 5… Clinton was supposed to play a team from Greer on Sunday but bad weather caused that game to be postponed until Monday… When thy played the game, Greer took a 6-5 win handing Clinton their first loss of the tournament and dropping them down into the loser’s bracket… Clinton scored 2 runs in the top of the 1st off a Justin Copeland single and a homerun from Austin Copeland. Greer would score 5 runs in the bottom half off 2 walks, 2 errors and 3 hits…Clinton scored 2 more in the 2nd making the score 5-4, which remained the same until the 4th… Clinton tied the game in the top of the 4th…  Kason Copeland singled and scored off a single from Caleb Taylor… Greer managed to push across the winning run in the bottom of the 5th off a leadoff walk, a single and a sac bunt making the final score 6-5 and putting the All-stars in the losers bracket.
  • Monday (2): Clinton 8 – Delmae 0Again because of the rain delay on Sunday and having to make the game up Monday morning, Clinton was forced to play a second game on Monday… Good news here as Clinton bounced back to take an 8-0 win and stay alive in the tournament…Led by a dominating pitching performance from Zach Fortman the All-stars were able to rebound from a tough loss earlier in the day… Fortman pitched a complete game shutout, throwing only 53 total pitches and only facing 1 batter over the minimum.  He allowed 2 singles, 1 of which was quickly erased with a double play and struck out 3…Clinton put up 2 runs in the 3rd.  Bryce Young reached on a hit by pitch and Luke White followed with a homerun to centerfield making the score 2-0 after 3 innings…The bottom of the 5th saw the All-stars put the game away scoring 6 runs off 4 hits and 2 errors by Delmae…  Kason Copeland led off being hit by pitch and stole 2nd… Bryce Young singled moving Copeland to 3rd…  Young then stole 2nd…  Luke White reached on an error scoring Copeland and moving Young to 3rd…  Zach Fortman executed a perfect bunt single to score Young and White advanced to 3rd.  Fortman would steal 2nd and with runners on 2nd and 3rd Caleb Taylor hit a sac fly scoring White. With 2 outs, Justin Copeland reached on an error that also scored Fortman putting the All-stars up 6-0…  Justin Copeland would keep the inning going reaching on another Delmae error and advance all the way to 3rd on a single from his brother Austin.  Austin would steal 2nd.  With 2 outs and runners at 2nd and 3rd, Wil Stewart drove a single to left centerfield scoring both Copelands and making the final score 8-0… “Playing 2 games in one day can really stress your pitching, but we managed to stay alive and that’s all that matters. “Head Coach Matt Stewart commented afterwards… “Other than the 1st inning against Greer today we’re continuing to get good pitching and defense.  Our hitting as a team has been terrible…  If we are going to have any chance at advancing that must improve quickly…  Still proud of the way our kids bounced back after a tough loss today and beat a good Delmae team…  Zach Fortman pitched one of the best games I’ve seen at a time we really needed him the most. We’re still in and at this point that’s all we can ask for!”…With the win against Delmae, Clinton was supposed to play Greer again yesterday at 6:30pm and when I get those results I’ll pass them on.
