Big Inning Dooms Laurens 11-U LL All-Star Team

  • Georgia 13 – Laurens 3 (5)… For the second day in a row a big inning allowed the opponents to take a one-sided win against our Laurens 11-U All-Star team in the Tournament of State Champions up in Greenville, NC yesterday afternoon… This time it was the Georgia team that put 7 runs on the board in the bottom of the 4th inning and then went on to take a 13-3 win over Laurens in 5 innings… Laurens got on the board first scoring one run in the 1st inning when Zay Pulley was able to steal home… Laurens picked up 2 more runs in the 2nd inning the first coming on a solo homer by Harrison Moore… Laurens second run of the inning came when EJ Grant doubled and then made it home on a couple of wild pitches… That made the score 3-0 Laurens and unfortunately that would be all the runs Laurens would score… Georgia put 4 runs on the board in the bottom of the 2nd to go up 4-3 and would not trail the remainder of the game… In the second, they used 3 singles and a 3-run homer to get their 4 runs… Georgia added a single run in the 3rd inning and then broke the game open in the 4th inning putting 7 runs on the board to go up 12-3… They then were able to plate another run in the 5th inning to give them a walk-off win on the 10-run lead rule… Laurens bats were somewhat quiet as they managed only 5 hits while Georgia collected 13 hits… The only batter to get more than one hit yesterday for Laurens was Harrison Moore who in addition to the homer had a single… The loss dropped Laurens’ record to 1-2 in pool play and they will not be advancing to the single elimination round of the tournament… Congratulations to the team for winning the South Carolina State Championship and for their effort in the tournament against the best in the south in their age group!

  • Phillies 7 – Braves 6… The Atlanta Braves finished their 4-game series with the Phillies in Philadelphia yesterday pretty much the way the other games have gone in that they lost 7-6 to the Phillies thus giving the Phillies a sweep of the series… The Phillies put 4 on the board in the 3rd inning and another in the 4th before the Braves got a run in the 5th… The Braves scored 3 runs in the 7th to cut the Phillies lead to 7-4 and scored single runs in the 8th and 9th to make the score 7-6 Phillies but could get no closer… Kurt Suzuki had a 2-run homer (12)for the Braves in the 7th and Freddie Freeman picked up his 19th homerun of the season a solo shot in the 8th inning…. The game marked the end of an 11-game road trip for the Braves in which they won only 3 games… The start an 8-game home stand tonight at Sun Trust park with the Dodgers being the first team in for a 3-game series.
  • Tourist 5 – Drive 2… The Greenville Drive started a 3-game series last night at Flour Field and it did not start well for the Drive as they lost to the Tourist 5-2… The big inning for the Tourist was the 4th when they put 4 runs on the board to go up 4-1 and were never really threatned after that.
