Sports Report for Wednesday, 8-9-2017

Local Notes:

Raiders Host Byrnes in Scrimmage..

  • Yesterday the Laurens Raiders hosted the Byrnes Rebels in a scrimmage at KC Hanna Stadium… Last season Byrnes did not make it into the playoffs for the first time in many years… Well it appears that will not be the case this year as they looked to be a strong team this year handling Laurens fairly evenly… The Raider offense struggled to get traction as they seemed to cue in on the Raider running backs and the passing game misfired often… The Raider defense had its share of missed tackles but did have a few bright spots also… As coaches always say, scrimmages let you know what you need to work on… The Raiders and Red Devils will both travel to Woodruff tomorrow for a live game scrimmage.

Clinton O-Zone Game Details from Monday

  • Yesterday I told you that the Clinton O-Zone All-Star team (Team SC) had taken a 10-0 win over Tennessee on Monday but I did not have any details… Well coach Matt Stewart was kind enough to provide those details yesterday and they are as follows… The Clinton 11-12 All-stars broke open a close 1-0 game in the 4th and 5th innings scoring 2 in the 4th and 7 in the 5th to take a 10-0 win  over a solid Tennessee team in the Dixie Youth Ozone World Series in Oxford Alabama…The home team All-stars were led on the mound by Wil Stewart who pitched 4 innings giving up 2 hits, no runs, and striking out 7.  Zach Fortman pitched a 3 up 3 down 5th inning allowing no hits… Clinton scored 1 in the 1st off 3 walks and a double from Austin Copeland… The 4th saw the All-stars score 2 more off a solo homerun from Wilson Wages, a single from Luke White, and a triple from RT Corley… Clinton ended the game in the 5th scoring 7… The All-stars would get 4 singles, 4 walks and 1 error in the inning, highlighted by a 2 RBI double from Wil Stewart… “Tennessee is a very good team!  Their pitching and defense was as good as we’ve seen this year.  Hats off to Wil Stewart for keeping us in the game through 4 innings, 2 hits allowed and 7 strikeouts was tremendous as we were struggling a little at the plate.  Great job by our guys of hanging in there and battling at the plate, finally put some good swings together in the 4th and 5th innings.  Up next is a really good Texas team, we’ll need to have a much better start at the plate to advance in the winner’s bracket!!.”  Head Coach Matt Stewart commented after the game… Games for Tuesday were rained out… With the win Clinton advances to play Texas Wednesday at approximately 1pm in Oxford, Alabama at Choccolocco Park.
  • Game with Texas postponedClinton was supposed to play Texas yesterday but the weather in the Oxford area has been a problem from the start… Last night Coach Stewart let me know the game yesterday was cancelled due to rain and is now scheduled for 1pm today (weather permitting).

  • Phillies 5 – Braves 2… The Braves hosted the Philadelphia Phillies in game 1 of a 2-game series last night at Sun Trust Park in Atlanta and they were just too nice a host as the Phillies took a 5-2 win… The Braves got on the board first scoring 1 run in the 1st inning as Freddie Freeman had a solo homer (21)…. That would be the last time they led as the Phillies scored 2 in the 4th and 3 in the 5th and never were really threatened after that.
  • Drive 5 – Intimidators 3… The Greenville Drive evened their record in the second half of the season at 22-22 last night as they took a 5-3 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators up in NC last night… They had to come back to do it though as they fell behind 3-0 going into the 6th inning… In the crucial 6th inning, the Drive’s first baseman Jerry Downs had a 2-run homer to help spark the Drive’s comeback… With the win, the Drive assured themselves a win in the 3-game series which concludes tonight.
  • Panthers Training Camp … The Panthers once again are at Wofford College conducting their very popular preseason training camp… To go to the Panthers website where you can get all your questions as to dates, times, parking directions and what you can bring or not bring, click here….
