PC Notes:

The Blue Hose football team opens its season next Thursday on the road at Wake Forest and the home opener will be Sept. 18th vs. Campbell…. That means there is still plenty of time to get your season tickets for PC football… For more information and to get to a link to the season ticket application, click here.

Local Notes: 

Countdown to Kickoff… The numbers of days left to the first football games are as follows;

  • Clinton at Laurens (8-25-17): 0
  • Laurens Academy at Holly Hill (8-25-17): 0
  • PC at Wake Forest (Thursday, 8-31-17): 5
  • PC home opener vs. Campbell (9-18-17): 21

Laurens County TD Club… Once again the Laurens County TD Club has a full slate of very interesting speakers lined up for its meetings every other week during the football season out at The Ridge starting at noon on Fridays… There are several levels of sponsorship available and of course you can just come on the day of the meeting for a small fee… Now for a complete list of speakers and other information about the club, click here… If you still have questions, contact Marlene Owings at 864-833-2716 or by email at mowings@laurenscounty.org…. The next meeting will be Friday, August 25th and will feature the local coaches as the speakers.

WSPA Red Zone Football Previews… As they have done for the last several years, WSPA TV will be previewing different area football teams each night in their 6 pm & 11 pm newscast from now until the season starts on August 25th… According to their schedule on their website, they will feature the Clinton Red Devils on the 11 pm newscast on Thursday 8-25 the night before the opening of the football season… Then the next night (Friday, 8-25) on the 6 pm newscast they will feature the Laurens Raiders… If you wish to see their entire schedule, click here.

CHS & LDHS

  • Red Devils & Raiders Meet Tonight for County Championship .. Today is a date that has been marked on many calendars as Clinton and Laurens kick off their seasons tonight at KC Hanna Stadium… Laurens is looking for revenge after last year’s 34-29 loss to the Red Devils… A large crowd is expected and you can get your tickets in advance at Valvoline Express Care on Hillcrest Drive.
  • JV Football: Laurens 18 – Clinton 12 in OT…After bending a couple of times the Raider defense held Clinton on fourth and goal from 4 to last night to take a 18-12 overtime win at Wilder Stadium… Laurens led 12-0 at the half on a pair of TD runs by Dre Peake of 8 & 30 yards… Both 2-point conversions failed… In 3rd quarter Donte Dowdy intercepted a Jackson Mahon pass at the Clinton 24 yard line and on first play Navill Watson hit Kimon Quarles on a 74 yd. scoring strike and the 2-point conversion failed.to make score 12-6 Raiders with 10.4 seconds left in third quarter… Clinton scored again with 2:05 remaining in the game on a 6 yard run by Shy Kinard… Clinton was going for 2 points but a procedure penalty pushed the ball back to the 8 yard line… They decided to try to kick the PAT and Laurens blocked it… After a good return on the kickoff, Laurens took over at 50 and a few plays later looked like they would score on a pass but the Raider receiver fumbled at the Clinton 1 and the Red Devils recovered the ball there….Clinton then ran the last 44 seconds of the clock to send the game into overtime…Clinton won coin toss and elected to have the Raiders on offense first… The Raiders lost yards on first play but on third and eight Jackson Mahon hit Mark McGowan in front corner of end zone for 6 points and the 2-point conversion failed… Clinton took over at 10 and gained only 6 yards in the first 3 plays and Raider defense got in backfield on 4th & goal and stuffed the Red Devil running back for a loss to take the win.

Laurens Academy:

  • Football… Crusaders Travel to Holley Hill to take on the Raiders.
  • Volleyball… The Crusader volleyball teams traveled to Greenwood Christian yesterday and I don’t have any details other than the varsity swept the Hawks 3-0 giving the Crusaders their first win of the season but the Crusader middle school team fell 2-1.

  • BravesThe Braves were off last night and will start a 3-game series with the Rockies tonight in Atlanta… The Braves are 56-69 on the season and in third place in the NL East 19.5 games behind the division leading Nationals
  • Drive 10 Fireflies 0… In game 3 of their 3-game series with the Columbia Fireflies last night at Flour Field, the Greenville Drive took a 10-0 win thus giving them the series win… The Drive pounded out 15 hits to the Fireflies 4 and scored 5 runs in the first inning and never looked back… Jerry Downs and Bobby Dalbec both had three-run homers for the Drive…. The team now goes on the road with the first stop being in Augusta tonight.
  • Panthers 24 – Jaguars 23… In case you missed it last night, the Carolina Panthers came back to defeat the Jacksonville Jaguars 24-23 last night down in Jacksonville 

Broadcast Notes

  • Raider Football Broadcast… Our next Laurens varsity football broadcast will be this Friday night when Laurens host the Clinton Red Devils… We will start with our Friday Night Insiders program at 6:00 and then go live to KC Hanna Stadium about 6:35 with Doug Holiday calling the game and King Dixon adding his analysis of the game… Mike Hughes will report from the sideline…Our FM in-stadium transmitter will be set on 95.7 or 94.7… And as usual you can hear it live on the internet at www.wlbg.com.

  • Red Devil Season Football Tickets on Sale …. Season football tickets for Red Devil football are now on sale at CHS. .  During the summer dates we will sell season tickets Monday through Thursday from 8:30-1:30 in the athletics office located in the main gym…  When school starts back on August 17th tickets will be sold 8:30-1:30 Monday through Friday…  Please enter through the main entrance of the gym, and Kathy Schumpert’s office is to the left and first office on the left (beside the men’s restroom in the gym lobby).  Kathy will also have membership forms for you to sign up with the CHS Booster Club as well…  Season Tickets will be $45 for one season ticket and one parking pass…  It will be $90 for two season tickets and one parking pass…  If you are a senior pass holder, you may purchase a parking pass for $20…  Parking spaces are limited, so they will be issued on a first come first serve basis… All senior pass holders must come to pick up a new senior pass this year!!!!  Senior passes will be printed each year starting with this up and coming school year…  All seniors may pick up their new senior pass in the athletics office and may come during the hours listed above…  All seniors must be prepared to show an ID to Kathy Schumpert…  In order to receive a senior pass, an individual must be at least 65 years old or older… If you need to make arrangements for an alternate time to pick up season tickets or senior passes, please call Kathy Schumpert at 864-938-1981 or Nickie Templeton at 864-938-1982.
  • LDHS Athletic Booster Club – Century Club Membership… Membership renewal letters and forms for the Laurens Athletic Booster Club Century Club have been mailed to last year’s members… Now if you did not get yours or you would like to join the Century Club, don’t worry I have links to all the information you need to know about it here… To find out what you get with the Century Club (reserved seats, parking, passes to other regular season home sports, etc.) and cost, click here…. For the application form and instructions on how to join, click here… For the price this is the best value on attending Raider home athletic events!
  • Laurens County Mud Run – Battle Mud… The Laurens Family YMCA and Main Street Laurens will once again be holding one of its more popular events the Laurens County Mud Run otherwise known as Battlemud… It will be held on Saturday, August 26 rain or shine at the YMCA… Now this is a team event and you are guaranteed to get dirty rain or shine… Now you can call the YMCA at 984-2626 for more information or better yet click here to go the active.com website that has more information and where you can register.
  • Fall Baseball at the City of Laurens Parks & Recreation Department… Registration is now underway for fall baseball at the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department at their main office out at The Ridge… There will be “Coaches Pitch” for ages 6-8 and “Kids Pitch” for ages 9-1… Now registration for either is only $40 and registration closes Thursday, August 31… There will be a mandatory skills evaluation on Tuesday September 5…. For any questions about new bat rules or registration questions call The Ridge at 681-7275.
  • Fall Weeball / Tee Ball at the Laurens Family YMCA… Now there are also fall baseball opportunities for those ages 3-6 as the Laurens family YMCA has their Weeball & tee ball program… Again the ost is $40 and registration ends August 31… Practice will begin on September 5th at Collyar Park. Please register at the Laurens Family YMCA and call them if you have any questions at 984-2626.
