Local Notes:

CHS / LDHSRaiders win County Championship.

  • Football Laurens 24 – Clinton 18… Last Friday night the Laurens Raiders laid claim to the mythical County Championship by defeating the Clinton Red Devils 24-18 in a great game at KC Hannah Stadium… The Raiders won the toss and elected to take the ball first to open the game… The Raiders drove down field and put the first six points on the board on a 15 yard run by Troy Dendy at the 10:7 point of the first quarter… Devon Hubner then added the first of his three PATs on the night…. Clinton took over on their own 12 yard line after the kickoff and started running the ball down the field with a power running game like to Red Devil teams of days past… After getting to the Raider 39 they switched their tactics and Konnor Richardson hit a wide open Dawson Green for 6 points (kick was blocked) with 3:58 left on the clock in the first period… After a couple of possessions changes, the Raiders got on the board again on a 24 yard field goal by Hubner with 7:47 left in the half… Clinton came right back down the field and once again caught the Raider secondary napping as Richardson hit Zay Bennett on a 61 yard scoring strike (PAT missed)… The Raiders managed to put 7 more points on the board just before the halftime when Troy Dendy carried it in from 10 yards out and Hubner added the PAT to make it 17-12 at the half… Both teams continued to mostly pound the ball in the second half but the Raiders did pick up a TD through the air as Ryan Campbell hit Aaron McLeod on a 25 yard scoring strike with 5:59 left in the third quarter… Clinton’s last score came on an 11 yard run by Konnor Richardson with 9:36 left in the game and the point conversion failed… Clinton did not give up and drove down the field only to fumble at the Raider 11 yard line where Davon Richmond recovered the ball and the Raiders ran the clock out for the 24-18 win… Both coaches expressed pride in how their teams played in a hard-fought game… As soon as I get the official stats I will bring them too you… Clinton will host Greer this Friday night while Laurens travels to Inman to take on the defending AAA Champions the Chapman Panthers.
  • Volleyball: Clinton 3 – Laurens 0… On Thursday night the Raiders and Red Devils also faced off against each other this time it was on the volleyball court at CHS… In varsity action the Red Devils prevailed by a score of 3-0 with the first two sets being very hard fought… The first set saw the Red Devils take a very close 27-25 win and the second set saw them prevail by a score of 25-23… The Red Devils finished the Raiders off by taking the third set 25-14… Clinton is now 2-0 on the season.
