Sports Report for Friday, 9-1-2017

PC Notes:

Wake Forest 51 – PC 7… The Blue Hose opened their season last night on the road up at Wake Forest on a sour note as the Demon Deacons took a 51-7 win… Wake jumped out early putting 16 points on the board in the first quarter and never looked back… Wake led 51-0 before the Blue Hose got on the board with 8:23 left in the game on a 14 yard run by Mark Robinson with Brett Norton’s PAT splitting the uprights… For more information on this game and comments from coach Tommy Spangler, click here.

Local Notes:


  • Red Devils host Greer…. The Red Devils are scheduled to host the Greer Yellow jackets tonight at Wilder stadium… Last year the Yellow Jackets took a 21-7 win over the Red Devils last year in Greer and finished the season 6-5 finishing second in Region II-AAAA… They lost to North Augusta 54-34 in the first round of the playoffs… This year they are 1-1 on the season opening the season in week 0 with a 41-14 win over Westside in Anderson and losing to Byrnes at home last week 42-7


  • Raiders Travel to Chapman… The Laurens Raiders are scheduled to travel to Inman tonight to take on the defending Class AAA Chapman Panthers… Last year the Panther defeated the raiders 49-33 at KC Hanna Stadium in a game that Laurens led at the end of the first half but lost DQ Floyd for the second half with a concussion and starting quarterback Nathan Rudder in the second half to a season ending knee injury… Chapman finished the season 12-3 and defeated Dillon 29-27 for the AAA Championship… Chapman is 2-0 on the season defeating Union County 35-20 and Seneca 56-17.

Laurens Academy

  • Football: Wardlaw 62 – LA 0… The Laurens Academy Crusaders moved their football game with Wardlaw up a day due to weather an unfortunately for Crusader fans the move did not help the Crusaders as the Patriots took a 62 – 0 win at Todd Kirk Field… The Patriots held the Crusaders to just 28 yards rushing with Charlton McCall getting 24 of them in 4 rushes… The had 24 yards passing with Thomas Lowery going 6-11 with 2 interceptions and the leading receiver was Joshua Moore with 4 receptions for 20 yards.… Kenny Langston led the Crusader defense with 8 tackles..
  • Volleyball: LA 3 – WW King 0… Now there is better news where the Crusader volleyball team is concerned as the Crusaders took a 3-0 win over the Knights of WW King… Set scores were 25-10, 25-21 and 25-7
  • MS Volleyball: LA 2 – WW King 1… The middle school volleyball team was also victories as they took a 2-1 win over the Knights

  • Cubs 6 – Braves 2… The Atlanta Braves started a 4-game series in Chicago with the Cubs on a less than stellar note as the Cubs took a 6-2 win… The Cubs simply outhit the Braves 11-6 and got the clutch hit when needed… One of the Braves runs came on a solo homer by Lane Adams on a pinch-hit homer in the 7th inning
  • Drive 12 – Braves 1… The Greenville Drive played their last home game of the regular season last night and they finished the home season with a bang as they took a 12-1 win over the Rome Braves… The Drive pounded out 15 hits with 4 of them being homers… The Drive have 4 games left in the regular season and they will play all 4 of them up in Ashville taking on the Tourist starting tonight.
  • Steelers 17 – Panthers 14… In case you missed it last night, the Pittsburg Steelers took a 17-14 win over the Carolina Panthers in their final preseason game… Click on the score for more details.

Broadcast Notes

  • Raider Football Broadcast… Our next Laurens varsity football broadcast will be tonight when Laurens travels to Chapman… We will start with our Friday Night Insiders program at 6:00 and then go live to KC Hanna Stadium about 6:35 with Doug Holiday calling the game and King Dixon adding his analysis of the game… Mike Hughes will report from the sideline…Our FM in-stadium transmitter will be set on 95.5, 104.1 or 87.9 whichever I find is best when I get there… And as usual you can hear it live on the internet at

  • Laurens County TD Club… Once again the Laurens County TD Club has a full slate of very interesting speakers lined up for its meetings every other week during the football season out at The Ridge starting at noon on Fridays… each week the local coaches will recap the games their teams have played since the last meeting and the talk about the game that night… There are several levels of sponsorship available and of course you can just come on the day of the meeting for a small fee… Now for a complete list of speakers and other information about the club, click here… If you still have questions, contact Marlene Owings at 864-833-2716 or by email at….   • Fall Soccer at the Clinton YMCA… Registration is now open at the Clinton Family YMCA for fall soccer… It is open to youth ages 3-12 and will be divided into three age appropriate groups.
