Sports Report for Tuesday, 9-5-2017

Local Notes:

CHS:

Cross Country: This past Saturday the Red Devil cross Country teams participated in the  2017 Eye Opener Meet in Spartanburg at the Roger Milliken Research Center… While cross country does not appear on everyone’s radar screen it is a sport whose popularity is on the upswing… That was evidenced Saturday by over 75 schools from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee… Clinton competed in the Championship and JV Divisions… Twenty six of the red Devil team members set personal best times at the meet…. The team will be back in action today as they travel to Ninety Six.

  • Girls: The Red Devil girls’ team finished 32nd out of 39 teams in the Girls Championship Division which had 326 individual competitors… The top 5 finishers were (Name, place out of 326 & time); Paige Trent – 30 -21:05, Dorothy Rent – 130 – 23:29, Erykah Richard – 174 – 24:32, Ava Machione -246 -26:15 and Chelsea Hill – 248 – 26:30.
  • Boys: The boy’s team finished 33rd out of 45 teams with 439 individual competitors… The top 5 finishers for the Red Devils were (Name, place out of 439 & time): Zac Bagwell – 95 – 18:41, Nick Perkins – 178 – 19:40, William Scott – 192 – 19:49, Billy Hograth – 206 – 20:02 and Justin Nobles – 250 – 20:30.
  • JV Boys: The JV boys’ team was also in action competing against 663 individual competitors… The top 5 finishers for the Red Devils were (Name, place out of 663 & time); David Wilkie – 116 – 20:51, James Anderson – 264 – 22:23, Conner Donley – 279 – 23:34, Keenan Dominick – 299 – 22:46 and Josh Bryant – 340 – 23:18

LDHS 

  • Cross Country Boys: The Laurens Raiders also sent some young men to the Eye Opener last Saturday… The top 5 finishers for the Raiders were (Name, place out of 439 & time): Ben Carter – 291 – 20:50, Orin Patterson – 317 – 21:10, Jaden Rice – 318 – 21:10, Will Jenkins – 341 – 21:30 and Jackson Edwards – 370 – 22:09… Murphy Rush, Zack Brown and Trevor Neal also competed but finished further back in the pack.

Laurens Academy:

  • Cross Country… The Laurens Academy cross country team was also in action at the Eye Opener in Spartanburg last Saturday and I can tell you that Dawson Foster finished 309th out of 439 competitors with a time of 21:03 while Luke Kerber finished 351st with a time of 12:36… These times were personal best for these young men… The Lady Crusaders also participated and Julia Kerber finished 274th out of 329 competitors with a time of 27:36… Hannah Stribling and Lindsey Burroughs also competed but finished further back.

  • Rangers 7 – Braves 2… The Braves opened a series at Sun Trust Park last night with the Texas Rangers on a sour note as the Rangers took an 8-2 win… Matt Adams picked up his 20th home run in the 4th inning (a 2-run shot) but the Rangers countered with 3 homeruns of their own.
  • Drive 7 – Tourist 2… The Greenville Drive concluded their 4-game series with Tourist in Ashville last night and they concluded it on a positive note as they took a 7-2 win thus avoiding the sweep by the Tourist… They simply outhit the Tourist 15-5 in the game… That also marks the end of the Drive’s regular season and had a season high 79 wins for the franchise… The Drive finished first in ten Southern Division of the SAL but third behind the Charleston RiverDogs in the second half of the season… The Southern Division Championship round will begin on Wednesday night as the Drive take on the Charleston RiverDogs at 7:05 in Charleston… Game two of the series will be at Fluor Field at 7:05 PM on Friday, and if necessary, the teams would play game three in Greenville on Saturday night at 7:05.

Broadcast Notes

  • Raider Football Broadcast… Our next Laurens varsity football broadcast will be this Friday night when Laurens travels to Irmo… We will start with our Friday Night Insiders program at 6:00 and then go live to Irmo about 6:35 with Doug Holiday calling the game and King Dixon adding his analysis of the game… Mike Hughes will report from the sideline…Our FM in-stadium transmitter will be set on 101.7, 198.9, 103.5 or 107.1 whichever I find is best when I get there… And as- usual you can hear it live on the internet at www.wlbg.com.

  • Laurens County TD Club… Once again the Laurens County TD Club has a full slate of very interesting speakers lined up for its meetings every other week during the football season out at The Ridge starting at noon on Fridays… each week the local coaches will recap the games their teams have played since the last meeting and the talk about the game that night… There are several levels of sponsorship available and of course you can just come on the day of the meeting for a small fee… Now for a complete list of speakers and other information about the club, click here… If you still have questions, contact Marlene Owings at 864-833-2716 or by email at mowings@laurenscounty.org…. The next meeting will be Friday, September 9th and the featured speaker will be Clay Hendrix Head Football Coach at Furman University coaches as the speakers.
  • Throw Back Night at CHS… On Friday September 22, the Clinton Red Devils will honor the 1977 and 1987 State Championship teams during “Throwback Night” in their game versus Chesnee… All members and coaches of the two championship teams are invited to attend… Special jerseys will be worn that replicate the 1977 state championship uniforms and will have a commerative patch that honor both teams… All team members are encouraged to email Coach Webb at andrewwebb@lcsd56g.com if you plan on attending… After the game, all team members and coaches are invited to go to the high school to eat “Friday Night Chicken” in the school cafeteria with the team… The throwback uniforms will be available to purchase for $50… The State Champion members will have the first opportunity to buy the jersey, and then they will go on sale to the public. Go Big Red!
  • Fall Soccer at the Clinton YMCA… Registration is now open at the Clinton Family YMCA for fall soccer… It is open to youth ages 3-12 and will be divided into three age appropriate groups.   • Flag Football at the Laurens YMCA… Registration in now open thorough October 1st for flag football at the Laurens YMCA… Registration is open to youth ages 3-14 and the cost is $50 for YMCA members and $60 for non-members… Practices will begin at 5:45 on October 2nd and games and practices will be on Mondays and Thursdays… For more information call the Laurens YMCA at 984-2626.
  • Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame Accepting Nominations for 2018 Class… The Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame is now accepting nominations through October 31st for their second class, the Class of 2018… Those selected will be inducted March 27, 2018 in a 6:30 pm ceremony at The Ridge… But first you the general public must nominate those you think are worthy and fall into the set criteria for inclusion in the hall… For more information about who is in the hall already, criteria those nominated have to meet and other information about the hall, click here… Nomination forms are available at www.laurenscountysportshalloffame.comFor any questions about the Laurens County Sports Hall of fame, contact Billy Dunlap at bdunlap@golaurens.com.
