Sports Report for Friday, 9-8-2017

  • The Citadel at PC Tomorrow… As I Mentioned to you yesterday, tomorrow’s football game between PC and The Citadel has been moved to PC due to the threat of bad weather and will start at noon… PC season ticket holders can pick up their tickets at a designated tent in front of Bailey Memorial Stadium and individual tickets will be on sale… For more about the ticket situation, click here… This will be the first meeting of the two teams in Clinton since 1937 and the last time PC took a win over The Citadel was back in 1979 when they won 21-13… For more information about this game and the history of the series between the two teams, click here.

  • Boys Cross Country… Recently the boys cross country team participated in a meet at Ninety Six and finished fourth… For details on the meet including the top finishers for the Red Devils, click here.

LDHS: last night at KC Hanna Stadium the Laurens Raiders hosted the Irmo Yellow jackets in JV and C-team action.

  • JV: Laurens 10 – Irmo 0… In JV action, the Raider defense pitched a shutout as the Raiders took a 10-0 win… The games only TD came with 9:09 left in the first half when Jackson Mahon carried the ball in from 12 yards out and the PAT failed… It was 3 play drive that went only 12 yards and was setup by a high snap to the Irmo punter that caused him to have to fall on the ball at the Irmo 12… The Raiders second score came with 6:35 left in the third period when the Raider defense had Irmo pinned back at their on 1 yard line… The Yellow jackets were flagged for holding in the end zone which by rule gave the Raiders a safety… The Raiders final score took place at the end of Irmo’s next possession when again they were in their own territory at the 6 yd. line and on fourth down the snap sailed over the punters head and out of the back of the end zone… The JVs are now 2-0 on the season.
  • C-Team: Irmo 24 – Laurens 20… In C-team action prior to the JV game, The Raiders spotted the Yellow Jackets a 16 point lead at the half and then tried to comeback but fell a little short as Irmo took a 24-20 win… The Raiders first score in the second half was on a 24 yard run by Shemare Dendy and he also added the 2-point PAT… Jerimiah Fuller had the next Raider TD on a 19 yard run but the PAT failed… The Raiders last score came on a 13 yard pass play from Cole Mundy to to cade Liner but the PAT was unsuccessful… The team is 0-1 on the season.
  • Boys Cross Country…T he boys placed 6th out of 6 teams. Evan Prince led the way with for the Raiders with a time of 19:02. He was followed by Ben Carter 20:19, Will Jenkins 20:59, Orin Patterson 21:23, and Jaden Rice with a time of 21:34. Several boys had PRs (personal records): Will Jenkins, Murphy Rush, Zack Brown, Collin Harlen, Parker Wasson, Florencio Jones, and Andrew Jewell.
  • Girls Cross Country…The Girls placed 6th out of 6 teams. JaNayiah Jones led the way with a time of 26:50. She was followed by Priscila Jaungui 27:47, Jasmine Epperly 27:49, Hope Wilson 29:30, Jada Wix 31:29 Emma Hill 33:07, and Alliah Caswell 34:05. Several girls had PRs: JaNayiah Jones, Priscila Jaungui, and Hope Wilson

Laurens Academy:

  • MS Football: Cambridge Academy 22 – LA 20… Crusaders lost a heartbreaker to the Cougars at Todd Kirk Field
  • Volleyball: LA 3 – Cambridge 0… Set scores were 25-7, 25-18 & 25-13
  • MS Volleyball: LA 2 – Cambridge Academy 0… Sorry no other details.

Middle School Athletics:

  • FB: Hickory Tavern 8 – Gray Court-Owings 0… Yesterday afternoon the Hickory Tavern Panthers hosted their arch rival Gray Court-Owings Tigers in a low-scoring game that the Panthers won 8-0… GCO got the ball first and had trouble moving the ball and turned the ball over on downs at their own 8 yd. line… A couple of plays later Austin Roach hit Mason Hamby for the games only TD… The PAT failed… GCO had trouble moving the football all night while HT moved it pretty well but just could not finish out the drives… The final two points of the game came with 2:34 left in the first half Hayden McHone and Nicholas Tucker dropped the GCO quarterback in his own end zone for a safety.
  • LMS 54 – Sanders 22 (7th grade game)…. Scoring for LMS; James Rawl to Isaac Craig on a 40 yd. TD pass/ 2pt fail, Zy Todd on a 35 yd. TD run/ 2pt fail, James Rawl to Cason Elledge on a 55 yd. TD pass/ 2 pt. fail, Rawl to Jay Pulley on 40 yd. TD pass/ 2 pt. fail, Isaac Craig with kickoff return 85 yd. TD open 2nd half/ 2pt fail, Isaac Craig with 11 yd. rush TD/  Zy Todd 2 pt. conv run good, James Rawl to Zy Todd 15 yd. TD pass/ 2pt conversion with Isaac Craig run good & Trae Beeks 2 yd. TD run/  Tre Massey 2 pt. conversion run good… Outstanding Players: Isaac Craig, Zy Todd, James Rawl, Cason Elledge, Austin Godfrey…. Coach’s Comments:    Started slow but we showed resilience and never gave up.  Sanders played a great game just had a few bad breaks and we capitalized on them.  Our defense was sloppy but made a few adjustments and helped out.  We have to start faster and get better every week.

  • Braves 6 – Marlins 5… The Braves opened a 4-game with the Marlins in Atlanta last night and found themselves trailing 5-4 going into the bottom of the 9th inning… The Braves rallied scoring 2 runs to take a 6-5 win on Kurt Suzuki’s walk off single with two outs.
  • Drive … The Drive will face the Charleston RiverDogs tonight and if the Drive win the capture the SAL Southern Division crown and if not they will play again tomorrow night with the winner of that game taking the crown.

  • Raider Football Broadcast… Our next Laurens varsity football broadcast will be this Friday night when Laurens travels to Irmo… We will start with our Friday Night Insiders program at 6:00 and then go live to Irmo about 6:35 with Doug Holiday calling the game and King Dixon adding his analysis of the game… Mike Hughes will report from the sideline…Our FM in-stadium transmitter will be set on 89.3, 90.1, 101.7, 103.5, or 107.1whichever I find is best when I get there… And as- usual you can hear it live on the internet at www.wlbg.com.

  • Laurens County TD Club… Once again the Laurens County TD Club has a full slate of very interesting speakers lined up for its meetings every other week during the football season out at The Ridge starting at noon on Fridays… each week the local coaches will recap the games their teams have played since the last meeting and the talk about the game that night… There are several levels of sponsorship available and of course you can just come on the day of the meeting for a small fee… Now for a complete list of speakers and other information about the club, click here… If you still have questions, contact Marlene Owings at 864-833-2716 or by email at mowings@laurenscounty.org….   • Throw Back Night at CHS… On Friday September 22, the Clinton Red Devils will honor the 1977 and 1987 State Championship teams during “Throwback Night” in their game versus Chesnee… All members and coaches of the two championship teams are invited to attend… Special jerseys will be worn that replicate the 1977 state championship uniforms and will have a commerative patch that honor both teams… All team members are encouraged to email Coach Webb at andrewwebb@lcsd56g.com if you plan on attending… After the game, all team members and coaches are invited to go to the high school to eat “Friday Night Chicken” in the school cafeteria with the team… The throwback uniforms will be available to purchase for $50… The State Champion members will have the first opportunity to buy the jersey, and then they will go on sale to the public. Go Big Red!
  • Fall Soccer at the Clinton YMCA… Registration is now open at the Clinton Family YMCA for fall soccer… It is open to youth ages 3-12 and will be divided into three age appropriate groups.   • Flag Football at the Laurens YMCA… Registration in now open thorough October 1st for flag football at the Laurens YMCA… Registration is open to youth ages 3-14 and the cost is $50 for YMCA members and $60 for non-members… Practices will begin at 5:45 on October 2nd and games and practices will be on Mondays and Thursdays… For more information call the Laurens YMCA at 984-2626.
  • Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame Accepting Nominations for 2018 Class… The Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame is now accepting nominations through October 31st for their second class, the Class of 2018… Those selected will be inducted March 27, 2018 in a 6:30 pm ceremony at The Ridge… But first you the general public must nominate those you think are worthy and fall into the set criteria for inclusion in the hall… For more information about who is in the hall already, criteria those nominated have to meet and other information about the hall, click here… Nomination forms are available at www.laurenscountysportshalloffame.comFor any questions about the Laurens County Sports Hall of fame, contact Billy Dunlap at bdunlap@golaurens.com
