Sports Report for Tuesday, 10-24–2017

PC Notes:

  • Basketball Season Just Around the Corner… Well the weather outside is starting to get cooler and that means that basketball season is just around the corner… For the first time in 28 seasons the men’s team will not be led by Coach Gregg Nibert who stepped down after last season Dustin Kerns takes over as the team starts its season on November 10th… The women’s team will open their season on November 10th also under the direction of Todd Steelman who is starting his second season as the women’s head coach… For more information about men’s basketball at PC click here and for more information about the women’s team, click here.

Local Notes:


  • Varn Makes North-South Team… Congratulations go out today to CHS Kody Varn because he has been selected as a member of the North team that will participate in the Touchtone Energy Program North-South All-Star Game on December 9th in Myrtle Beach… Varn is a senior offensive lineman for the Red Devils.
  • JV FB: Clinton 36 – Broome 22…  I finally was able to learn the score of the Clinton JV football game last Thursday against Broome and while I don’t have any details other than the score its good news for Red Devil fans as the Clinton took a 36-22 win.
  • Tennis Match Today… The Lady Red Devil tennis team was supposed to travel to Powdersville yesterday for a second round match in the Class AAA State Tournament… Well the bad weather forced the match to be rescheduled to toady at 5 pm and I am sure the team would love to have a their fans follow them up to cheer them on.

Laurens Academy… The Laurens Academy Crusader volleyball team was in action this past weekend down in Myrtle Beach as they participated in the SCISA Class A State Volleyball Tournament

  • Friday, Match 1: LA 2 – St John’s Christian 0… In their first match, the Crusaders took a 2-0 win over the St John’s Christian Academy Cavaliers… Set scores were 25-21 and 25-11
  • Friday, Match 2: Cathedral Academy 2 – LA 0…  In their second match on Friday the Crusaders had to face the #1 seeded and undefeated Cathedral Academy Generals out of the North Charleston area… The Generals lived up to their seeded as they defeated the #2 seeded Crusaders 2-0… Set scores were 25-18 and 25-18… The loss dropped the Crusaders into the losers’ bracket of the double elimination tournament.
  • Friday, Match 3: LA 2 – Curtis Baptist 0… In their third match of the day, the Crusaders rebounded to take a 2-0 win over Curtis Baptist… Set Scores were 25-17 and 25-11
  • Saturday, Match 1: Wardlaw 2 – LA 0… The Crusaders were back in action at 11:30 on Saturday morning as they took on the Patriots of Wardlaw Academy… The Patriots took the first set 25-17 and then took a hard fought 25-20 win in the second set to take a 2-0 win and eliminate the Crusaders from the tournament… Congratulations to the Crusaders on winning the region and reaching the quarter-finals of the state tournament.

Middle School Athletics:

  • FB: LMS 34 – Westview 33… Another score that I just received from last Thursday involves the LMS Tiger football team that traveled to Greenwood to take on the Westview Titans… Good news here as the Tigers took a hard fought 34-33 win over the Titans… For more details on the game, click here.


  • World Series… Well in case you have been in a cave or comma I think you most likely know that the World Series gets started tonight as the Houston Astros will travel to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers… Game 1 of the best of 7 series will feature two former Cy Young winners on the mound as the Astros left hander Dallas Keuchel (14-5, 2.9 ERA and 125 Ks) will face off against the Dodgers Clayton Kershaw who is also a lefty (18-4, 2.31 ERA and 202 Ks)… The game will be on Fox and coverage will start at 8:00 pm ET…. Laurens Academy:

  • Varsity Football: Friday the Crusaders travel to Northside Christian in Columbia for their last regular season game starting at 6:30. 

Broadcast Notes.

  • Raider Football Broadcast… Our next Laurens varsity football broadcast will be this Friday night when Laurens travels to Greenwood to take on the Eagles… We will start with our Friday Night Insiders program at 6:05 and then go live to Greenwood about 6:35 with Doug Holiday calling the game and Mike Hughes adding his analysis of the game… Coach Rob Sheffield will report from the sideline…Our FM in-stadium transmitter will be set to one of the following depending on which I find is best when I get there: 95.7 or 101.9… And as usual you can hear it live on the internet at
  • Middle School Football Broadcast…. Join us here Wednesday at 6:00 pm as we bring you all the action live from the KC Hanna Stadium as the Sanders Yellow Jackets take on the LMS Tigers in middle school football action…. And as usual you can hear it live on the internet at
  • 9th Grade & JV Broadcast… Join us here Thursday as we bring you 9th Grade JV Football action from KC Hanna Stadium as the Raiders host the Greenwood Eagles in a doubleheader of 9th grade & JV football… We will go live between about 5:30 for the 9th grade game and then the JV game will follow about 15 minutes after the 9th grade game finishes (about 7:30)… And as usual you can hear it live on the internet at

  • Laurens County TD Club… Once again the Laurens County TD Club has a full slate of very interesting speakers lined up for its meetings every other week during the football season out at The Ridge starting at noon on Fridays… Each week the local coaches will recap the games their teams have played since the last meeting and the talk about the game that night… There are several levels of sponsorship available and of course you can just come on the day of the meeting for a small fee… Now for a complete list of speakers and other information about the club, click here… If you still have questions, contact Marlene Owings at 864-833-2716 or by email at….   • Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame Accepting Nominations for 2018 Class… The Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame is now accepting nominations through October 31st for their second class, the Class of 2018… Those selected will be inducted March 27, 2018 in a 6:30 pm ceremony at The Ridge… But first you the general public must nominate those you think are worthy and fall into the set criteria for inclusion in the hall… For more information about who is in the hall already, criteria those nominated have to meet and other information about the hall, click here… Nomination forms are available at www.laurenscountysportshalloffame.comFor any questions about the Laurens County Sports Hall of fame, contact Billy Dunlap at
