Sports Report for Thursday, 10-26-2017

Local Notes:

CHS:

  • Tennis: CHS 6 – Powdersville 1… I need to catch up with the Red Devil girls’ tennis team which was in action back on Tuesday but I just received the score of their match at Powdersville yesterday… The #3 seeded Red Devils traveled to Powdersville to take on the #1 seeded Patriots in second round action in the Class AAA playoffs and the ride back was a happy one as the Red Devils advanced to the third round by taking a 6-1 win… Elizabeth Jones, Mary Catherine Dailey, Gerri Hill, and Gracie Spangler all took wins in singles action… Jones and Dailey teamed up to form the #1 doubles team and defeat their opponents as did the #2 doubles team of Mary Grace Johnson and Aaliyah Johnston…. For complete match details, click here… The win on Tuesday allowed the Red Devils to advance to the third round and travel to Woodruff to take on the Wolverines a  region opponent yesterday… At the time of this report being recorded, I still had not been informed of those results.

LDHS:

  • 9th Grade & JV Broadcast… Join us here Thursday as we bring you 9th Grade JV Football action from KC Hanna Stadium as the Raiders host the Greenwood Eagles in a doubleheader of 9th grade & JV football… We will go live between about 5:30 for the 9th grade game and then the JV game will follow about 15 minutes after the 9th grade game finishes (about 7:30)… And as usual you can hear it live on the internet at www.wlbg.com.

Laurens Academy:

  • MS FB: WW King 48 – LA 18… The Crusader middle school football team closed out their season last night at Todd Kirk Field and the news is not what I like to report as the Knights took a 48-18 win over the Crusaders… Sorry no other details.

Middle School Athletics:

  • LMS 40 – Sanders 14… Yesterday at KC Hanna Stadium the Sanders Yellow Jackets and the LMS Tigers closed out their football season as they met for their annual battle for the mythical City Championship… It was close games at the half as the Tigers only led 14-6 but in the second half the Tigers broke the game open as they went on to take a 40-14 win… The Tigers scored on the first play of the game as Zy’Tavius Todd rambled down the left side for a 55 yard TD… The 2-point conversion was successful as James Rawl connected with Devon Redd to make it 8-0 with 7:26 left in the first quarter… On the third play of the Tigers next possession, sanders Ty Roberson had pick-six that was returned about 70 yards for the score… The extra point conversion failed and the score stood 8-6 Tigers with 3:27 left in the first quarter… Todd had another TD run just before the end of the quarter to make the score 14-6 which is where it stood at the half as neither team score in the second quarter..  The Tigers then went on the score 26 unanswered points in the second half before Sanders finally got on the board with 1:36 left in the game on a 70 yard run by Ty Roberson and the ensuing 2-point conversion made when Andrew Kuykendall connected with Vantavious Butler… In the second half Todd had a 20 yard TD run to give him 3 in the game… Rawl had 2 TD passes one to Devon Redd and the other to Waldrick Burnside… Jay Pulley closed out the scoring for the Tigers when he connected with Tre Massey for a 42 yard score… In addition to his pick-six, Roberson had another interception for the Yellow Jackets.

Pros:

  • World Series Game 2: Astros 7 – Dodgers 6 (11)… Well in case you did not stay up late enough to catch all 11 innings of game 2 of the World Series in LA, I’ll tell you that the Astros evened the series at one game apiece by taking a 7-6 win in 11 innings…  The two teams traded the lead several times and the Astros Marwin Gonzalez tied the game at 3-3 with a homer in the 9th inning to send it into extra innings… Both teams scored twice in the 10th inning and in the 11th the Astros’ George springer had a 2-run homer to give the Astros a 7-5 lead… The Dodgers then scored a run in the bottom of the 11th but the rally fell short as the Astros took the 7-6 win… For more details on the game, click here…. The series now moves to Houston with game 3 taking place tomorrow at 8pm.
