Local Notes:

CHS:

  • Tennis: Woodruff 4 – Clinton 1… Yesterday I told you that the lady Red Devil tennis team was supposed to play Woodruff in the third round of the AAA Tournament but no one had sent me the score in time to get it on yesterday’s sports report… Well I know have the results of that match up a Woodruff on Wednesday and I must say that the Wolverines ended the Red Devils season by taking a 4-1 win… Mary Catherine Dailey picked up the Red Devils only win as the #2 singles player but a couple of others were close…. For complete match details, click here… Woodruff as you may know is in the same region as the Red Devils and finished second in the region while Clinton finished third in the region… Woodruff advances to play Mid-Carolina for the upper state crown on Monday… Mid-Carolina is in the same region with Clinton and Woodruff and they finished first in the region…  The reason I point this out is to simply say the Red Devils are in a tough region when it comes to girls tennis…  If you would like to look back at their schedule and results for this season, click here.
  • JV FB: Clinton 42 – Woodruff 34… The JV team finishes the season 5-0 in region play… Sorry no details on scoring… To see the team’s schedule and result, click here.

LDHS… The Raider 9th grade and JV football teams closed out their season last night at KC Hanna Stadium as they hosted the Greenwood Eagles

  • 9th Grade: Greenwood 27 – Laurens 6… In the first game last night, the Greenwood Eagles took a 27-6 win over the Raiders… Greenwood used their running game to take a 14-0 lead at the half and the Raiders only score with 1:08 left in the third quarter When Shemare Dendy capped a 55 yard drive with a 1 yard run to make the score 14-6… Greenwood scored twice in the fourth quarter to make the final score 27-0… To see the schedule and results for the Raiders, click here.
  • JV: Laurens 32 – Greenwood 7… Now the news is better for Raider fans where the JV team is concerned as the Raiders took a 32-7 win over the Eagles… The Raiders scored the first time they had the ball as they drove 50 yards with Jackson Mahon carrying it from 1 yard out to make it 6-0 as the two-point conversion failed… Greenwood went 3 and out and after the punt the Raiders drove 43 yards for their second score with 6:54 left in the half… Again Mahon carried in from 1 yard out and Lindin Gault converted the 2-point PAT and the Raiders led 14-0 … The Raiders scored again with less than a minute left in the half when Zachary Miller carried it in from 5 yards out and the score stood 20-0 at the half… The Raiders’ first score of the second half came with 1:23 left on the clock in the third quarter when Mahon connected with Mark McGowan on an 11 scoring pass to make it 26-0 Raiders…. Zachary Miller closed out the Raider scoring early in the fourth quarter on an 8 yard run to make it 32-0… Greenwood avoided the shutout by scoring with 26.3 seconds left in game and getting the PAT to make the final 32-7… Again if you want to see the teams schedule and the result for the JV squad, click here.

Middle School Athletics:

  • FB: GCO 12 – HT 6 in OT… last night the Hickory Tavern Panthers traveled to Gray Court to take on their arch rivals the Gray Court-Owings Tigers… This was the second time the two teams met on the gridiron this season as they played a non-region contest at HT which the Panthers won 8-0… Well yesterday the Tigers turned the tables and took a 12-6 win in overtime… GCO scored first as Hunter Brewington connected with Caleb Franklin on a 15 yard scoring strike in the second quarter to put the Tigers up 6-0… The panthers tied the game as time was running out in the first half as Austin Roach hit Dale Hostetler on a scoring pass… Neither team scored in the second half so the teams went into overtime with GCO getting the ball first…The Tigers scored on the second play in OT as Isaiah Burnside carried it in from the 5… The panthers then got their crack at it but were not able to score which then led o a celebration by the Tigers.
