Sports Report for Wednesday, 11-8-2017

Local Notes:

LDHS:

  • Raider Honor Coach Dennie… Two weeks ago tomorrow the Raider and Laurens District 55 Family lost a long time educator, coach, and friend Duane Dennie…well in case you missed it, the Raider football team payed tribute to Coach Dennie last Friday night at their game with Northwestern… The Raiders attached a simple round green sticker to the back of their helmets that simply read “Coach Dennie”… Before the game LDHS Athletic Director Mark Freeze stated here on WLBG that Coach Liner and the Raiders were going to try to plan something else to honor him at the Spring Game that concludes spring practice toward the end of the school year… we will do our best to keep you posted on this as details become available… Our continued thoughts and prayer to Laura, Elizabeth and the rest of the family.
  • Meet the Raiders This Friday… The 2017-2018 Raider Basketball Squads will be introduced at 6:00 PM on Friday, November 10, 2017 in the gym at Laurens District High School… This is your chance to meet the student-athletes who will represent the Raiders at the Freshman, JV, and Varsity levels in both girls’ and boys’ basketball… There is a $2.00 admission charge, which will go to support the basketball programs… Coach Yoneko Allen and Coach Ryan Walker are both getting their teams ready to start the season

College Notes:

  • College Football Rankings Poll…. The latest College Football Poll was released by the committee that sets up the final 4 for the playoff in the FBS Division of College Football… The top 4 spots remain exactly the same as they did last week… Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame and Clemson hold down those spots in that order… That means that if the bowl season started tomorrow Georgia would be taking on Clemson and Alabama would be taking on Notre Dame… Well the playoffs do not begin tomorrow and a lot can happen between now and when they do start… Now below the #4 spot there was a good deal of shakeup as Ohio State and Penn state both lost for the second time… To see the entire top 25 rankings, click here.

Pros:

  • NASCAR… Well the NASCAR season is winding down fast as there are only 2 races left on the schedule… This Sunday the race will be out in Phoenix for the Can-Am 500… This is the last of the elimination races as the field of 8 drivers remaining in the “playoffs” will be cut to 4 after the race this Sunday…. Three drivers have already clinch a spot in the finals next week and they are Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick… The five drivers who will be trying to win that final spot in the last race next week are Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott, Chase Elliott and Jimmie Johnson…. Only one of them will get that spot and to see who does tune into NBC starting at 2:30 pm ET this Sunday.
