Sports Report for Monday, 11-20-2017

Local Notes:

  • High School Basketball Starts Today… The high school basketball season kicks off tonight as both the boys and girls teams at Clinton an Laurens are involved in different preseason tournaments… The Laurens Academy Crusaders are starting their regular season today also… A quick look at today’s schedule shows:

Laurens Academy

  • All four of the Crusader teams will be in action today as they host Wardlaw… The action will kick off this afternoon at 4:00 pm with the middle school girls to be followed by the middle school boys and then the varsity girls and boys will take to the court in that order… Head out to the academy today if you get a chance as they are the only county high school teams at home today.

CHS

  • Boys… The Red Devils are hoping to have similar success as they did last year when they went 21-4 and being knocked out of the playoffs in the Upstate Finals… Coach Romines and the team open tonight as they participate in the Greenville Tip-Off Tournament where they will face Eastside at 7:30.
  • Girls… Coach John Gardner and the girls team are coming off a 6-15 season which was an improvement over the previous year and they will open up tonight in a pre-season tournament up at Woodruff… I do not know at what time they will play or against whom as Coach Gardner did not get that information to me.

LSHS

  • Girls… Coach Yoneko Allen and the Lady Raiders are opening their season tonight as they participate in the Tip-Off Tournament at BHP… The Raiders will take on the host BHP starting at 7:30 and BHP will be a good test for the team as the Bears are usually a very tough team in the Class-AAAA ranks.
  • Boys… The Raider boys’ team also returns to action tonight as they travel to Spartanburg to participate in the SCA Impact Sports Tournament… The Raiders have a new leader this season as Coach Ryan Walker takes over after serving as an assistant at Dorman the last few years… The Raiders were very young last year with hardly any starters coming back from the previous team but Coach Walker has a little more experience to work with this year… They start tonight at 8:30 as they take on the host Spartanburg Christian Academy in an 8:30 contest.

Pros:

  • NASCAR… In case you missed it yesterday, Martin Truex Jr. won the final race of the season down at Homestead, Fla. but more importantly he took the his first Monster Energy Cup Series title… He won the race by less than a second over Kyle Busch… Fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. closed out his career with a 25th place finish in the race and afterwards said he plans on keeping the #88 he drove… For more information on the race, click here.
