Sports Report for Thursday, 11-23-2017

Local Notes:


  • B: Travelers Rest 72 – CHS 68… The Clinton Red Devils closed out their participation yesterday in the Greenville Tip-Off Tournament with a tight 72-68 loss to Travelers Rest… Zay Hurley led the Red Devils in scoring with 21 points…. Three other Red Devils were in double-digits as Zay Bennett had 14 points, Ty Priestly 11 and Ahmari Bates 10… Zay Bennett was named to the All-Tournament team averaging 14.3 pts and 7.8 rebounds in the tourney… The Red Devils finished the tournament with a 1-2 record.


  • B: Greer 64 – LDHS 58… The Laurens Raiders also finished up their participation in the SCA Impact Invitational taking on the Greer Yellow Jackets… Laurens jumped out to a 15-9 lead at eh end of the first quarter but trailed 32-25 at the half… Greer widened the lead to 51-39 going into the last quarter of play… The Raiders started chipping away at the Greer lead and with 1:21 left in the game they cut the lead to 2 points as Greer lead 60-58… The raiders were then forced to foul 3 times before they Yellow jackets were put into the bonus…. Once in the bonus they hit 4 of 5 free throws down the stretch as Laurens was not able to score again giving Greer a 64-58 win… Dravious Copeland and Carson Todd each had 18 points to lead the Raiders… Cedraquan McDowell chipped in 12 points and Amaija Hill 10…. Todd was also named to the all-tournament team… Laurens finished the tournament with a 1-2 record.

  • G: LA 60 – Shannon Forest 18… Yesterday I told you that the LA Crusaders hosted Shannon Forest in varsity action and that I did not have complete results on how the girls’ game went well I have them now and I can twll you that the Crusaders took a 60-18 win over S.F… the Crusaders jumped out to a 10-2 lead at th end of the first quarter and then outscored FF 30-10 in the second quarter and did pretty much the same or better in the second half in route to the win… Ruthie Moore had a game-high 31 points and Taylor Campbell was also in double digits with 10 points… Others scoring for the Crusaders were; Regan Williamson 8, Blair Quarles 5, Jennifer Wu 4, and Julia Kerber 2… The Crusaders improve to 2-0 on the young season. 

Middle School Basketball… Earlier this week the Hickory Tavern Panthers hosted Laurens MS, McCormick MS and Ware Shoals MS in the HT Turkey Tip-Off Tournament…. Scores were as follows:


  • Girls: LMS 32 – WS 9 and HT 30 – MC 11
  • Boys: LMS 39 – WS 9 and HT 37 – MC 36 (OT)


  • Consolation Games: G: MC 19 – WS 6 and B: MC 48 – WS 5.
  • Championship Games: G: HT 42 – LMS 11 and B: LMS 33 – HT 31 (OT).

  • Laurens County TD Club… Once again the Laurens County TD Club has a full slate of very interesting speakers lined up for its meetings every other week during the football season out at The Ridge starting at noon on Fridays… Each week the local coaches will recap the games their teams have played since the last meeting and the talk about the game that night… There are several levels of sponsorship available and of course you can just come on the day of the meeting for a small fee… Now for a complete list of speakers and other information about the club, click here… If you still have questions, contact Marlene Owings at 864-833-2716 or by email at…. The next meeting will be Wednesday night, December 6 when the Awards banquet will take place…   Danny Morrison former President of the Carolina Panthers will be the featured speaker. And the club will name the All-County Team, Coach of the Year and Player of the Year,
  • 18th Annual Laurens Family YMCA Rein Deer Run… The 18th Annual Laurens Family YMCA Rein Deer Run is coming up on Saturday, December 9th… A few things have changed for this year and I want to make sure you are all aware of it… If you click here, you will open a flyer that has registration information, registration fee, sponsor levels and other information including the fact that you need to register by November 17th to avoid late registration fees… You will notice, a parent can complete a registration form AND register his/her children for the fun run on the same form… Also there are discounts for teams… New this year will be inflatables for those children that register for the fun run, a Dress like a Reindeer Costume Contest and a drop box to benefit the Toy Drive for the Laurens City Police….   • Breakfast with Santa… The Laurens family YMCA is also having Breakfast with Santa again this year on Saturday, December 16th… The tickets for this event will again be $5 and everyone entering MUST have a ticket… This covers the cost of breakfast, photo with Santa and lots of games, crafts and activities… Tickets will go sale at the front desk of the YMCA on November 1st… New This Year will be a Merry Market… They will have several small businesses set up “markets” for last minute Christmas gift purchasing… If you or someone you know that may be interested in participating in the Merry Market, please have them contact the YMCA at 984-2626… That is the number to call for more information about the event in total or click here to open up a flyer about the event.
  • Youth Basketball in Laurens… Youth basketball registration through the City of Laurens and the Laurens Family YMCA is now open… If your child is ages 3-6 or 13-15 they will register at the Laurens YMCA and they must do so by 1-2-2017… If you child is ages 7-12 they will register at the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation offices located at The Ridge… Registration for these ages closes Dec. 1, 2017… The fee at either facility is $40 per child… Specific information for each league will be given out at the time of registration… If you have any questions you call the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation office at 681-7275 of the Laurens YMCA at 984-2626.
  • Youth Basketball and Cheer at Clinton YMCA… The Clinton Family YMCA is offering open registration for ‘Youth Basketball’ and Cheerleading for six (6) playing divisions and Cheer through the December 12th registration deadline….
