Sports Report for Monday, 1-8-2018

Local Notes:

CHS … Last Friday night the Red Devils opened up region play as they hosted the Chapman Panthers in a pair of varsity basketball games…

  • B: Clinton 76 – Chapman 75… In boy’s action the Red Devils took a hard fought 76-75 win over the Panthers… The Panthers led 17-14 at the end of the first quarter but the Red Devils fought back and took a 36-31 win into the locker room at the half… Early in the third quarter the Red Devils enjoyed a 10 point lead but the Panthers fought back to take a 59-56 lead going into the final 8 minutes of play… The Red Devils retook the lead with about 5 minutes to play as the two teams continued to battle and the game was tied at 75 all when Zay Hurley was fouled with 12 seconds left to play and hit a free throw to put the Clinton up by one… The Panthers had a chance to win the game when with .5 seconds left a Panther was fouled while fighting for a free throw which put him on the line for a one and one… he missed and the Clinton grabbed the rebound and the game… JD Payne led the Red Devils with a game high 22 points and Ty Priestly was close behind with 20 points… Jahleed Cook was also in double digits with 10 points… Zack James finished with 8 points, Zay Bennett with 6, Vilo Boyd 5, Zay Hurley 3 and Konnor Richardson 2…. The Red Devils are now 9-6 overall and 1-0 in region play.
  • G: Chapman 38 – Clinton 30… Unfortunately the news is not as good where the girls are concerned as the Lady Red Devils fell to the Lady Panthers by a score of 38-30… The two teams battled to a 7-7 tie at the end of the first quarter but at the half the Panthers had a 19-15 lead…. The Red Devils had offensive problems in the third quarter as Chapman led 32-21 going into the final 8 minutes of play… To their credit, the Red Devils di not quit and fought back to get within 3 points toward the end of the game but could not complete the comeback… Deshanti Watts led the Red Devils with 13 points… Terriauna Bennett finished with 9 points, Savannah Campbell with 5 and Ashlyn Abercrombie with 3… The Lady Red Devils are now 6-9 on the season and 0-1 in region play and will return to action tomorrow when the varsity teams travel to Mid-Carolina HS to take on the Rebels.

Laurens Academy … The Laurens Academy Crusaders traveled over to Anderson last Friday night to take on the Anderson Christian School Lions.

  • G: LA 48 – ACS 5… The Crusader girls wasted little time in determining the outcome of their game with then Lady Lions as they jumped out to a 20-2 lead in the first 8 minutes of play and then held the Lions scoreless the next two quarters as they went on to take a 48-5 win improving their record to 15-1 on the season… Regan Williamson and Jennifer Wu led the Crusaders with 11 points each… Blair Quarles finished with 7 points, Audrey Noffz 6, Florence Mitchel and with 2 points each were Mattie Noffz, Julia Kerber, Julia Marlett and Linsey Burroughs.
  • B: ACS 60 – LA 26… Now I wish I could say that the boys completed the sweep of the Lions but that is not possible as the Crusaders shooting was about as cold as the weather and the Lions roared out to a 60-26 win… They jumped on top 22-6 after the first 8 minutes of play and the Crusaders never really threatened after that… Joshua Moore was the only Crusader in double-digits with 11 points… Noah Moore had 6 points, Wil Tindall 4, Dawson Foster 3 and Charlton Moore 2… The Crusaders fall to 4-10 on the season.

College Notes:

FBS Championship Tonight: Alabama vs Georgia…. Well unless you are an alien who just landed on earth or have been a coma and have just come out of it, you know that Alabama and Georgia will compete for the FBS National Championship tonight at about 8:15 in Atlanta… The game will be carried on ESPN with coverage starting at 8:00 pm… I’m sure the network execs are not real thrilled about it being al all-SEC finals as that most likely will decrease the number of viewers nationwide except here in the south… Who to pull for…. Your guess is as good as mine but I am going to be rooting for the DAWGS.
